Heating off /on in summer?

Verbena17 · 15/04/2024 14:09

Can you clear something up for me?
So I turned off our central heating last week because the outside temp is much warmer than it has been.

Today DH moaning saying ‘it’s turned colder you’ve turned off the heating’.
I said yes - it’s nearly May and most days are warmer and we don’t need heating on.

He says if we keep the heating on and set at 20 degrees, it won’t cost us anything all summer unless it clicks on.

Is this right?
If yes, why do the majority of people turn off their heating spring & summer?
Surely it’s because for the majority of spring & summer, the outside temp is much closer to the inside temp and therefore we don’t feel as cold?

I reckon having it on will still mean we are paying to keep it kept at 20 degrees - because surely it will click on at night if it drops below that?

This is probs a really stupid question 😬

Like others, I can’t imagine having the thermostat at 20 overnight.

Mine is set for 18 for an hour or so in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening, 16 during the day (my husband has a life-limiting illness so needs some heating), and 7 overnight. It’s clicked on the last couple of mornings, but not evenings or during the day, so not costing much at all.

mondaytosunday · 15/04/2024 15:37

Mine is set at 18, so last week several days it didn't come on. It's much chillier today but solar gain and all it might not come on until night time. Once it get consistently warmer I turn it off completely - I don't want it clicking on overnight when the temp drops if it's going to be warm during the day.

justasking111 · 15/04/2024 15:42

Ours is on for three hours in the morning, four hours in the evening. The thermostat decides if it is below 18. If we light the log burner the heating doesn't come on. We don't have radiators on in the bedroom ever.

It will go off next month until October, November.

I turn my heating system off in the summer, I don't want it randomly coming on if it gets to a certain temperature. Switched it off last week, hoping to not need it now until October time.

ThirdStorm · 15/04/2024 15:49

Mine is off off. It will remain so until end of September (or longer if I can cope). I generally won't now allow myself to put it back on but if the temps really drop I might and then rely on the thermostat (which is at 18c).

HuminaHuminaHumina · 15/04/2024 15:52

20 degrees! Blimey.
I have turned ours back on today as it’s only 6degrees here, but thermostat is set to 15 and I’ve put an extra layer on.
We only have it at 16 degrees night time over winter and 18 degrees when we are sat on the sofa, occasionally pushed to 20 on very cold days.

I’d be dripping wet with sweat if it was set for 20 overnight when I’m snuggled under the duvet.

Fluffyc1ouds · 15/04/2024 15:57

I was ready to pack away the heaters (we don't have central heating) but the thermometer in DCs room says 11 degrees at the moment and it's feeling a bit chilly. I expect we'll need them this evening.

In my previous house we used to just turn the thermostat right down in the summer so it never clicked on, but I guess at this time of year it's still occasionally needed.

Mairzydotes · 15/04/2024 16:00

I leave mine on all the time . I reduce the control so it doesn't come on until it drops below 16°c. It doesn't come on at all in the summer on this setting. ( I haven't done it yet) .

I imagine op has just turned the ability to heat the radiators off, but left the boiler on for the hot water.

Your dh isn't totally wrong , if you pay by dd , they will base your average on you using it more often than not.

Newestname002 · 15/04/2024 16:09

My heating schedule is currently set between 16-17.5C depending on the time of day. Having said that I've been boosting to 20C as I'm nursing the mother and father of a spring cold, coughing and spluttering and generally under the weather. I can breathe much easier if the air is warm in my rooms (and I'm well layered up, including two pairs of warm socks and a woolly hat! Currently enjoying a large up of bovril and a wholemeal digestive before I have another nap... 🌹

Mumaway · 15/04/2024 16:11

Ours is on 'frost protect' at 11deg overnight, during day when we're all out, and from May-October.

Waitingfordoggo · 15/04/2024 16:23

Ours is set to come on at 10°
It’s currently 16° in the house.

20° would be far too warm for us- especially at night when we’re under a cosy duvet!

idontlikealdi · 15/04/2024 16:28

We've got a older system, no thermometer, just a dial on a timer, if its cold we turn it up if it's hot we turn it off. Otherwise it is on a timer, usually 0600 - 0800 and 1530-2230. if it's cold in between it gets overridden.

I cannot bear the heating on at night and sleep with a window open year round.

reluctantbrit · 15/04/2024 16:38

We have it on 19 degrees but it currently only goes on in the morning as during the day it's warm enough in the house.. I can carry the thermostat around, at the moment it's on the living room window sill, showing 22.5 degrees but that's because it gets the afternoon sun (if there is any). If I feel cold I bring it in the kitchen which is always cold.

We normally turn the thermostat off around May when it's consistently warm enough in the morning to be without heating and back on in October.

Fizbosshoes · 15/04/2024 16:45

Is it just half way through April rather than nearly May for anyone else? 😉

DH once complained at me for putting DS in a wooly hat (when he was a toddler) and putting the heating on when it was August. It was 8°.

schloss · 15/04/2024 16:47

@Verbena17 Your DH is correct. The temp may be a bit high but everyone is different as to how hot or cold they feel.

It’s like half way through February round here.

generalexpert · 15/04/2024 16:50

Just leave mine on 20 all year round. There again, I have a massive gas bill.

Cuwins · 15/04/2024 16:54

Mine is set to 18-20 all year round. It just clicks on if it goes under that.

ShiftySquirrel · 15/04/2024 17:00

We have very old controls, we can turn on/off the heating and the hot water.
The heating is off now, I think I switched it off in mid march, but we have lit the log burner quite a few times.

We don't pay by direct debit so warmer months are cheaper and colder months are more expensive.

Verbena17 · 15/04/2024 17:19

Namenamchange · 15/04/2024 14:12

Do you mean turned your boiler off? Or turned the thermostat down? 20 is high to have at night time

No not turn off the boiler - that’s how we also have out water heating up.
I don’t mean have it constantly all night. I just have it on twice a day etc
like we do in winter

From May to October? On at 11 degrees - we don’t have frosts in the Uk between May and October 🤔

Frost protect is just a word - it means it will kick in if it drops below 11c for the previous poster

My frost protect is at 5c

It wasn’t set to come on over night at all. It switches off at 23:30 until 06:30 the next day….including over winter unless the temp dips to around -2 and then we might put it on overnight

OP posts:
Verbena17 · 15/04/2024 17:30

So are we saying that having the heating on during the day in summer won’t be charging us ANY £££ amount as long as it doesn’t click on?

Thing is, even in the middle of summer if the temp drops to say 10 degrees, it feels way too warm to put the heating on compared to say today, cold blustery 10 deg when I’ve just gone and popped it back on.

OP posts:
Beezknees · 15/04/2024 17:30

I still have mine on, it was only 10 degrees today, not particularly warm yet.

I have electric heating which is different, there are 2 settings to mine. One for summer which only heats the water and one for winter which activates the radiators. Still got the winter one on, it's at 20 for a couple of hours morning and evening and 16 the rest of the time. Usually switch to the summer one around the beginning of May.
