Psoriasis or eczema?

I will try to post a couple of pictures but from looking online it is hard to tell the difference. I have scaly, dry burning patches on my hands. I have had these on my feet in the past but not currently. I have quite a few joint issues on and off so it’s really important that if it is psoriasis I know about it because of the potential link with arthritis. However most likely thing is some kind of eczema or dermatitis. It is NOT ringworm as I did a course of treatment to rule it out and it irritated it but didn’t help. Does it look anything like psoriasis?

I’ve had psoriasis for over 50 years and your pictures do not look like it to me. My psoriasis spots were smaller and had a scaly crust surface which sometimes flaked off. When new spots appeared, they looked like red raised insect bites until the scales appeared.

Once I went through the menopause, my psoriasis improved dramatically and now I only have the odd red area which I quickly treat with my cream before they get a grip. So I can’t show you a photo of a scaly area as I don’t have any!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! And I’m glad to hear you’re having fewer problems with it since menopause.

Defo not eczema op, could it be fungal if it's itchy?

Catastropher · 15/04/2024 13:47

More like eczema. Psoriasis is distinguished by silvery scales of skin. It’s more likely to occur on knees and elbows etc.

I have exactly the same on my thumbs and first finger, itches like mad sometimes. Peels a Bit. The pharmacist said dermatitis / cold weather and recommended Norwegian formula but it doesn’t help. Now trying Itch Relief E45

Thanks for your responses. Looks like the jury is out!! I should of course see a doctor but that’s easier said than done.

I get contact dermatitis from some cleaning chemicals & soaps & looks very like that.
Try wearing gloves for cleaning etc. Have you changed any cleaning products/hand soap etc.

glycerine in soap seems to cause it for me.
It's a mild irritation rather than allergic reaction or disorder so no treatment apart from avoiding what's caused it. E45 cream might help.

LittleLittleRex · 15/04/2024 14:16

You don't need to see a doctor, a pharmacist will have a fairly good idea and be able to give you the right cream then and there. Is it just on your hands? If so, I'd put my money on contact dermatitis - maybe try to figure out the trigger, have you changed soap, for example.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

It looks like it could be Pomphylox, which is a form of excema on your hands and feet. It's also known as dishydrotic excema or hand and feet excema. I have this and do need Betnovate steroid cream when it's bad but usually keep it controlled with lots of cream like Aveeno and emollient. Stress makes it worse.

Papyrophile · 15/04/2024 14:26

I agree with @Horsewhisperers that it's hyper-hydrosis. I get it too. More moisturiser and dabs of a topical steroid cream. Mine is usually worse in winter.

I get these circular patches of skin peeling on my hand and thinning sore skin. Exactly like that

GP did a sample to rule out ringworm and it was contact dermatitis. I worked out it's certain shampoos /conditioners

However o also get eczema on my inner forearms and eyelid where it manifests at scaly round patches

Shame we have no health service any more for minor complaints like this.

thedendrochronologist · 15/04/2024 14:30

Sorry I treat it with steroid cream - what ever I can lay my hands on! I used the dogs last time.
