Should I go to the interview or am I wasting my time

I’ve somehow managed to get an interview for a marketing team manager at another organisation. I’ve worked in marketing for 10 years and have lots of stakeholder manager experience and managing my own work etc and supporting colleagues but I’ve never actually been a people manager.

I went for an interview internally for a team leader role, not even line management and didn’t get it as someone else got it who was already a team leader and did a sideways move so my confidence is a bit low so I’m feeling a bit like I’m kidding myself to go ahead.

have I got no chance moving into management and it’s a waste of my time or should I try anyway? I want to progress but feels like it’s out of reach.

Assume you've managed agencies? Use examples from that. Particularly how you have overseen marketing projects using different agencies.

Definitely still go for the interview, people management is pretty simple. If you can agree clear objectives and have regular reviews you have people management skills.

Also, managing and mentoring colleagues is definitely relevant. Use examples. You can probably slip the word 'managed' into the interview without outright saying you were their line manager.

I manage work from agencies, lead on campaigns from start to finish, I’ve mentored new colleagues and helped with new starter inductions?

Have some stories ready about how you have had to have difficult conversations about performance.
Think about how you handled them and what the outcome was.

Absolutely go to the interview.

Prepare some examples using STAR framework of times that you have:
coached others
set a goal for others and supported them to deliver
addressed poor performance
trusted a colleague with responsibility for delivering something.

Give it your best shot. If you don't get the job this time then ask for feedback and ask your line manager to help you to build relevant experience

Of course, go to the interview. Interview experience is valuable and if you don’t get the job, you’ll have learned something more about what interviewers are looking for in similar roles and will be even better prepared another time.

You might even find that you’re a good fit for this job and get offered it. You’ve had suggestions about how to prepare and possible scenarios, so get your best bib and tucker on, put a smile on your face and go and do the best you can!

Some of the interviews I’ve had, have been invaluable for the experience, even if I didn’t get the job.

Even if everything didn't work out with previous attempts, a new opportunity can be a different experience and lead to the desired results. Remember that every interview gives you experience and a chance to show off your skills. Don't lose motivation!

I did the interview - it was hard snd long but I’m glad I put myself out there. Won’t find out for a while as they’re interviewing next week! Hopefully they don’t forget me! Guess I’ll shall see
