Will fruit be more affordable soon (in spring/summer)

My kids have had nothing but easy peelers and apples over winter. I think they may have scurvy 😂

Am I being overly optimistic to think maybe berries, melons and grapes might come down in price soon?

Or at least have bigger pack sizes for the money?

Usually cheapest around June-August time

Meepsh · 14/04/2024 12:05

Roll on June! Thanks

We've got so used to eating all types of fruit year round. In the old days, it would have been apples from the store, or nothing, at this time of year.

Buy frozen berries. Much cheaper and they don't go off!

Thankfully it’s not the old days anymore!

They’re a bit mushy if you want to eat a bowl of them though. Ok in smoothies

Chewbecca · 14/04/2024 12:14

The price, and flavour, is largely dependent on the season.

shoppingshamed · 14/04/2024 12:14

Seasonal fruit will be cheaper when it's in season is that what you're asking?

Buy fruit from a market at the end of the day and you should be able to pick up loads for a fiver

Chewbecca · 14/04/2024 12:14

Fruits still grow in the same seasons as they did in the old days.

Yes I buy those but they make milkshakes with them 😂

Not as healthy as a fruit salad.

Sorry for clarity... I know it's seasonal. I'm not daft

I more meant with the COL and price rises on everything will they keep the prices the same even though the fruit is in season.

In years passed I knew the prices would come down in summer but in 2024 nothing seems to become cheaper!

We've pretty much stopped eating fruit apart from the occasional banana and apple, just not worth it! Instead I've been upping the veg at meal times so there are three veg instead of one. It's worked out much cheaper and I think probably better for us (non picky, mid teens).

Had some grapes and strawberries yesterday and it was a proper treat !

It's sad really isn't it. Then we're guilted for not being able to afford it.

When mine were small we had so much fruit. Every day they would have berries, kiwis, grapes, a slice of melon.

It really has become a treat.

Same here! Absolutely loved fresh kiwi and watermelon when they were little.

I'm trying not to feel too sad about it, it's not a million miles away from what my single mum gave me in the 80s and at least the choice in eating apples is better than golden delicious or red 🤢

Crinkle77 · 14/04/2024 12:29

Bananas are really cheap. I got 10 loose bananas for 90p yesterday. I also buy the M Savers soft fruit at Morrisons. The grapes are £1.59 and are usually nicer than the standard ones as they're sweeter. M Savers blueberries are £1.29 and they also have raspberries in that range but can't remember how much they are. But yeah melons have gone very expensive. £1.89 in Morrisons and a year or two ago they were about £1. I don't think British seasonal fruit will be that much cheaper but it will be tastier. Saying that in Summer Tesco do big punnets of strawberries and cherries for about £4/5 so worth keeping an eye out for.

Spendonsend · 14/04/2024 12:29

I knkw farmers are saying the wet winter will affect food prices, but i think its more wheat, barley, potatoes didnt get planted. I dont actually know about fruits.

frozendaisy · 14/04/2024 12:30

Honestly I don't think they will come down in price at supermarkets that much but can you get to a market stall?

You can buy amounts there and it's cheaper. It tends to go off quicker so it's better if you can get smaller amounts more regularly.

But it's always cheaper

I don't have an M&S near me.

I have a Tesco delivery saver pass.

So even when fruit if delivered it's often rotten and out of date as the pickers just grab anything.

I do buy bananas but they purpously leave them to go brown so I make banana bread 😂😂😂

Not M&S OP but M Savers. It's Morrisons own brand.

Chewbecca · 14/04/2024 12:34

Sorry to have suggested you are daft!

There are an awful lot of posters on here though who post 'why are my strawberries so yucky at the moment, my DC will only eat strawberries' in the middle of Winter.

Oh apologies! Misread.

I do have a morrisons in walking distance but I found it expensive but I'll go look at the fruit section.

Anything that needs transporting here from abroad will continue to be expensive.

Ridley4 · 14/04/2024 12:37

Think of what the weather has been like this year! The wet weather means things haven’t been planted or aren’t ripening. I expect both fruit and veg to be dearer this year. Spain and the Med have been experiencing lower than average rainfall so that will probably impact on their agriculture.

Bjorkdidit · 14/04/2024 13:05

Grapes aren't particularly expensive, you can get 2 large punnets for about £3.

People don't need anywhere near as much fruit as MN likes to believe, your DC won't get scurvy because they're not eating a bucket of fruit every day. Veg is also nutritious and some quite inexpensive, carrots, broccoli.

Or you could try growing your own raspberries, they do grow quite well.
