Would this size bedroom be large enough for DC?

We’re looking at buying a house, one has come up in a fantastic area but the second room is quite a bit smaller. It’s 3.6 x 1.9 m.

We are expecting our first baby and wondered if that size room will be enough space for a cot/bed, chair and storage probably up until they are around 5 or so when we’d next look to move again.

There are so many benefits to the house: the area, fantastic garden, off street parking on a quiet street, close to amenities, plus it has a large third conservatory type room downstairs which we could use as a play room. It’s not often this type of house comes up in this area so it feels like too good an opportunity to miss - but be honest, would the 2nd room size put you off?

It wouldn't put me off for a child so young no, especially as you can have a separate playroom to keep toys in.
How realistic is it that you could definitely move I five years or so?
You will probably get plenty of people along soon saying they had three kids share a bedroom the size of a stamp but I do think that having their own space to retreat to is really beneficial for children (the households I know with multiple children sharing a room are the ones with the most explosive arguments for example!) but it tends to be as they get older, a small room for a little one isn't really a problem.

All they really do in their rooms at that age is sleep, and up until around age 8 in my experience, so I'd say it's fine. It sounds as though you've got space downstairs for their toys and space for them to play outside.

Are you planning to have another child before you move though?

It's not brilliant but I just bought my first apartment and prioritised location over space, my 11yo has a bedroom 3.2x2.5 and I've made it work.

We have a very small box room for dd. It’s fine for cot bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe. We have also managed to fit a short cabin bed in which was fab as had storage underneath.

I would definitely work out if a single bed or short cabin bed will fit to future proof yourselves if you end up staying longer x

SpringOfContentment · 14/04/2024 11:27

It's narrow, but not particularly small.
It will partially depend on where doors/radiators /windows are how easy it it to furnish. If you can put some of the biggest furniture against a short wall, it will be fine.

How is it furnished currently?

That would be fine for a baby/toddler with toys downstairs. If you’re still there when DC is 6+ and wanting to spend more time in their room then you could do a high sleeper. The only issue is going to be if you want to have DC2 whilst still living there.

I think it's fine for a very young child. I'd be worried about what happens if for any reason you can't move. Can you fit a single bed in there at least?

Yes they’ve currently got a double and a chest of drawers in there

Op we have this, now my dd is older we bought her a higher sleeper, with a long desk underneath and chest of drawers- all matching- it looks great and the room doesn't look crammed and small.
When she was smaller she had a single bed and it worked fine too.
But the high sleeper is much better.

Minerva14 · 14/04/2024 11:41

If you can get a double bed in the room, then it’s fine.

More importantly can you get a single bed and a wardrobe/some kind of clothes storage?

whatageareyou · 14/04/2024 11:42

Currently fits a double bed? Absolutely fine. My room as a kid JUST got a single bed and small cupboard in it. I was there til I was 15, it was fine.

greengreyblue · 14/04/2024 11:46

It’s fine for a young child. Especially as it’s in a good area and has everything else you need. Our house has two large doubles and one tiny bedroom which our DC swapped throughout their whole childhood! They seem to be ok and unscarred. Go for it.
