Who knows about cars? What should I change mine for?

I currently drive a tiny 1 litre shoe box. It was fine as a second car in the households but I am becoming a single parent.
I need to change my car for something more practical but I haven't got a clue where to start looking.

What kind of thing should I look for if my requirements are:

  1. Decent boot size - i.e medium tent, camping chairs, camping stove, box of pots and pans size.
  2. Decent size - mine feels very small and inadequate on motorway slip roads for example. I'd like it to feel more secure.
  3. Possibilities for bike racks, either roof mounted or one of those over the back ones (not sure how those work as it was roof mounted on our family car).
  4. Not massive.
  5. Parking camera or sensors would be a bonus.

What’s your budget and what age of car are you looking at?

Mumaway · 13/04/2024 22:01

Need a few more specifics, like budget, manual Vs auto, petrol/diesel/electric...
However, my go-to are Toyota Hybrids. Super reliable, economical to run and own. They do a corolla estate or CHR that might suit your needs, however you need one with 'tech pack' IMO

Unsure on budget at present as I'm looking for a general idea of what would be ideal and how much that would cost me.

Age, not brand new, but I do t think I want to go older than 10 years as I have 2 small ones and am worried about the reliability of mine.

I think I'd want to say petrol, although I love the idea of a hybrid - but the regenerative breaking one not the plug in one.

Toyota Auris estate, hybrid if you can find one.

Passat or superb estate

whatageareyou · 14/04/2024 08:20

Nissan Qashqui.

Volvo estate, we had one and it was bulletproof proof. Big boot, solid construction and it never gave us a days bother. Sold it after it had done 150000 miles and it was still going strong.

Depending on your annual mileage it might be cheaper to buy a petrol. Petrol cars are cheaper and the fuel is cheaper. If you're doing lots of miles then maybe a diesel

We've now got a Mitsubishi outlander and it's not a patch on the Volvo. It's a hybrid but I'm not sure it's any cheaper to run than our diesel Volvo

VW Passat are great cars, but can be expensive

Have you looked at the Skoda Octavia or their SUV's?

Hyundai have 7 year warranties and their SUVs are supposed to be pretty good

I have a Seat arona which I love and would be fine for you say to say but probably too small for camping. A skoda octavia would be plenty big enough and feels sturdy.

I have a Mazda 3, it's a good step up from a little car but still not too big to drive. Next size up would be an estate which I personally wasn't keen on but I used to have a people carrier when I had little ones, added advantage was you lay back seats flat and for a double air mattress in the back, ideal if tent leaked!

Our last car was a Suzuki Vitara. The driving position is a little higher, plenty of boot room and was lovely to drive. We traded down in size to a Suzuki Swift as we didn't need such a big car, but I miss it.
