Favourite childhood food

Following on from conversation with friends earlier, is your childhood favourite meal still your favourite now? Several of my friends say their favourite remained unchanged but for me I've done a big u turn. As a child I was not a big veg fan nor did I like curry. Now a good vegetable curry would be up there in my top 3. Similar with fish. As a child a Spaghetti bolognaise or lasagne would have been my all time favourites but really not that bothered by them anymore. And I don't really think it's even down to exposure. My parents would cook all the foods I now love but I think it was just set in my head that I didn't like them.

My favourite was lamb stew. I don’t eat lamb anymore.

Toast Toppers! Sadly not available now so can't tell if I'd still like them!

My mum made me a tea called fish dish.
I was the youngest by many years so she always did me a high tea.
It was just white fish with slices of egg, a creamy sauce and some cheese on top and sliced tomato. Then put under the grill.
Never had it again after I was about 7, but it reminds me of her and being little.

Definitely.. my Mum was a great cook.. ( and baker). They were seven of us but we were well fed.. my favourite was a Sunday roast dinner.. either beef or leg of pork .. mash and roast potatoes.. veg depending on season ( I'm 66 so we had seasonal veg only) Cauliflower/ carrots/ cabbage / Swede etc .. and the best home made Yorkshire puddings to start..
She also made her own stuffing.
Roast dinners are still my favourite meals.

My mum wasn't a good cook so my favourite dinner was my grandma's roast dinner that we had every Sunday. A nicely cooked roast is still one of my favourites but mine is not as good as her's was. I don't think I've got an overall favourite meal though.

A roast dinner with mint sauce or cream of tomato soup.

Buttalapasta · 13/04/2024 19:31

Mine is the same but different. I loved spaghetti bolognaise but married someone from its spiritual home. 😆As a consequence, I've changed recipes and wouldn't dare serve it with spaghetti.

AhBiscuits · 13/04/2024 19:31

My mum used to make this curry from a jar and serve it with pineapple slices and soy sauce. God know where this combo came from but we all loved it.

Buttalapasta · 13/04/2024 19:33

My mum used to make a chicken and ham gougere with leftover chicken which I loved. It's a right faff to make though so I've only done it once!

When I was a child, my favourite food was pasta, and now it's lasagna, that's sort of the same thing.

Franticbutterfly · 13/04/2024 22:07

Potato waffles, crispy pancakes and beans.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 13/04/2024 22:17

My mum was a bad savoury cook, but good at baking, so my favourite meal was always high tea on Sunday when we had cold meat, salad, hard boiled eggs etc. followed by whatever cakes she had baked that day.

Nowadays my favourite meal would be a hot curry with chapatis - we never had curry growing up, so it wasn't on my radar.

Mushrooms.

When I was quite little I'd gone to bed but wasn't asleep and Dad called me to go downstairs. I thought I must be in trouble but I couldn't think what for. They were having creamed mushrooms on toast for supper and had called me down so that I could have some too.

I still think there isn't much that isn't improved by a mushroom.

Cola cubes, sherbert fountains, black jack and fruit salad chews.

My lovely mum was way beyond her time with food,so back in the 70s we had stir fried food with soy sauce ,spaghetti bolognaise with fresh basil and bay leaves, chicken curry. We all loved her cooking ,my dad who was a journalist at BBC cooked the amazing roast on a Sunday after his night shift.

bluetopazlove · 14/04/2024 01:16

My mum wasn't much of a cook , she worked fulltime back then so it would have to be Vesta chicken curry or Findus chicken curry .

Northernsouloldies · 14/04/2024 01:17

Anything out of a packet... better than boiled to death mince or dried out chicken.

justjuggling · 14/04/2024 03:07

My mum wasn’t a brilliant cook but did a couple of things really well. Her macaroni cheese is the best thing I’ve ever eaten and now I make my own version. She also liked to bake and made cakes every Sunday. I now do the same for my family.

Egg salad sandwiches! I haven't had one for such a long time no idea why, thank you for the reminder as I used to love these.

AhBiscuits · 14/04/2024 06:19

I love egg sandwiches, haven't had one in years. I'm going to make one for lunch tomorrow. I'll use salad cream for 80s authenticity.

MarmiteyCrumpets · 14/04/2024 07:08

Tuna noodles and roast potatoes (not together 😂). No longer eat fish, but would still eat roasties for every meal if I could.
