Tiny cut on finger - but it just won't stop bleeding. Any ideas how to stop it?

I picked up one of the blades for my chopping thingy, and got a tiny cut on the tip of my pinky finger.

I'm now on plaster number five, and it's still seeping through. When I take the plaster off, it's literally dripping everywhere.

I've tried pressing down on it for 15 minutes, but as soon as I take the pad off, it's bleeding again.

My husband has suggested superglue, but I'm not convinced! Any other ideas how to stop this thing from bleeding?

Super glue is not unreasonable, but first try, very thin smear of vaseline, then firm pressure with finger elevated above heart, no peeking at all, just pressure for 15mins with tissue or gauze

Cookerhood · 13/04/2024 17:45

Hold it above your head (actually above the level of your heart. It will soon stop.

Wrap in a tea towel tightly and hold above head as PP said.

Thank you. Holding my hand above my head, and typing single-handedly. Fingers crossed it stops.

Press down on it for 10 minutes, with out checking or moving it. Ideally with it up high

shellyleppard · 13/04/2024 18:22

I'd go with super glue but definitely hold it higher than your head and apply pressure to the finger that's bleeding x following

I did this a couple of months ago and had the same! I ended up with my arm in the air for about 20 minutes until it finally started to clot and stop.

olympicsrock · 13/04/2024 18:28

This is my specialist area.
Firstly STOP taking the plaster off . You are dislodging the clot.
First press firmly and continuously with direct pressure for 15 minutes .
Then apply a piece of micropore tape if you have it And then continue to press. A plaster will do if you don’t .
Then apply a small bandage around it.
Just let it settle down . Sit with your hand on a pile of cushions for a few hours.

Also buy a finger stall if you need to use your hands and it persistently opens up/plasters fall off once you've stemmed the bleeding. I once cut my finger tip with sharp scissors and steri strips and a finger stall both helped with healing. After I'd picked myself up from fainting at what I'd done to myself!

BettyShagter · 13/04/2024 18:39

You need a bandage, not a plaster.

And keep it elevated.

SpringOfContentment · 13/04/2024 19:25

No use if you don't have any in the house, but I usually have a packet of steri strips in the house. They are great for holding together things that split the scab every time you try and move or do anything - usually hands!

Hope it's stopped now.

HurdyGurdy19 · 13/04/2024 19:53

Thank you again. It does seem to have stopped now, but I'm wary of taking the plaster off to check again! I had to keep taking them off before because they were full of blood and it was dripping out the sides! But the plaster isn't discoloured ow which would suggest it's still bleeding.

I definitely need to upgrade the first aid box, and add steri strips, a finger stall and micropore tape.

Thank you for all the help. Hopefully it'll be ok now. My husband thought I'd taken leave of my senses with a tea towel wrapped around my fingers and my hand left aloft 😅

If the bleeding continues see GP, sometimes not clotting can be a sign of an underlying issue

stripeymonster · 13/04/2024 20:01

Don't take plasters off. My daughter cut a slice off her finger which took A & E doctors about 3 hours to stop it bleeding despite it only being about a cm. Steristrips and bandage eventually worked but it took hours before the bleeding stopped enough for the Steristrips to stick. Even 24 hours later it was still oozing. Took days to completely dry out.

Maybeicanhelpyou · 13/04/2024 20:32

Don’t be tempted to take the plaster off. Not even to peep!

Cherrysoup · 13/04/2024 21:00

Superglued both dogs this week, one pad, one cut to the leg. I superglued my thumb before when I didn’t know the spout of a Pyrex jug had somehow snapped off and I ran the sponge round, followed by my thumb. Lots of blood, but I didn’t fancy hours in A&E.

For any further incidents, get styptic powder (or vet powder) which helps to stop bleeding. Vet suggests leaving dressings undisturbed for 48 hours

Mumaway · 13/04/2024 22:20

So glad it has stopped. Try to now keep the plaster on and undisturbed.....

Piscesmumma1978 · 13/04/2024 22:25

The blades on choppers are scarily sharp. I’ve cut my finger on one by just touching it.

Could it be deeper then you think?
