Does anyone live in, or know, Torquay

Prompted by a link given on another thread, we've been looking at Premier Inn hotels in Torquay for a short break later this year.

There is one, Torquay Harbour Hotel, which is said to be a new hotel. I've had a look on google maps streetview and I'm wondering if it's the building site opposite the Hampton Hilton Hotel. The streetview is from April 2022. Can anyone let me know if that's correct?

We'd quite like a sea view if available, but if I'm looking at the right thing, then I think any view of the sea would be through the Hampton! In which case the Torquay Seafront hotel would be better (although a bit more expensive) .

It would be helpful if you posted a screenshot of what you are looking at.

TBH the harbour area in front of The Terrace is being redeveloped and it will be a lot noisier/less salubrious late at night in the town centre. I would probably go for the seafront hotel. I would guess most of the rooms there won’t have a sea view there either though, it will depend on which side of the building you are on. It is opposite the beach (across a main road). The other one is on a back street in the town centre above the harbour. I suppose it would be handy if you want to stumble out of Yates or some other bar or club straight into your hotel.

Sorry - this is what is on google maps, which should help identify it. I think the new Premier Inn is under construction on the left. It's on The Terrace, Torquay

Thank you for the information re the redevelopment of the area, and on balance, I think the seafront hotel is going to be better.

Yes, the building on the left of your photo is the new Premier Inn (Harbour). The Premier Inn (Seafront) is more likely to have sea views, although the hotel itself is a little more tired than a lot of Premier Inns. If I was coming as a family with kids I'd go for the Seafront as it's closer to the beach and is in an area full of other family style hotels. If I was coming as an adult couple I'd go for Harbour as it's close to lots of great restaurants etc. (Although I'd actually book a sea view room in the Hampton instead of PI)

If you want somewhere quieter with sea view and access direct onto the beach look at the Redcliffe at Paignton. Only a few miles along seafront road from Torquay. Staff are lovely.

I was just going to recommend the Redcliffe . Stayed there many moons ago when we were children. Absolutely loved it and fabulous views.

It looks as if the hotel you’re thinking of will have an obscured view. Give them a ring. The Terrace on which it stands is in an elevated position so some rooms might overlook the new hotel lower down.
Torquay is currently in a state of redevelopment down by the harbour and traffic is very disrupted at present. Not exactly looking it’s best.
Years ago it was a really select holiday destination but frankly, now, it’s become rather scruffy in parts. The walk along the promenade towards Tor Abbey from the harbour and from past the Pavilion, is pleasant enough and The Grand Hotel would offer great sea views if your budget can run to it.
Nevertheless there are good bits like Babbacombe, Cockington, Daddyhole Plain & Walls hill, the latter two for spectacular sea views and a cliff top walk. Parking nearby. The Osborne Hotel overlooking Meadfoot Beach will have sea views too.
The Elephant Restaurant and No7 (for fish) on Beacon Hill just up from the harbour, are great food destinations.
Years ago Torquay was was sophisticated and classy. Not so much now.

If anyone wants somewhere that’s cheap as chips but spotlessly clean, nice rooms, garden, parking. Doesn’t do food but there is a bar I can recommend the Great Western Hotel in Paignton too. Run by a really nice couple and a minute’s walk from beach and harbour.
