My DS wrote this and after my DM saw it and made some comments I'm looking for some outside opinions! So what age would you think he is if you saw this.

6/7

LauderSyme · 13/04/2024 00:18

Yes I thought 6 or 7 too.

WGACA · 13/04/2024 00:23

6 or 7 here too.

goldenretrievermum5 · 13/04/2024 00:24

8/9 as it’s joint up

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 13/04/2024 00:26

Dyslexic 10 yo.

heavencakes · 13/04/2024 00:27

I think because of the joined up writing they could be 7/8 but struggle with spelling.

Saschka · 13/04/2024 00:30

The handwriting is that of a year 4-5 child, the spelling is that of a year 1 child.

So I agree with the person upthread who said a 8-9 year old with dyslexia.

PilkosPumpPants · 13/04/2024 00:32

Our primary school teaches cursive writing before print. So 6/7.

Starsandflowers · 13/04/2024 00:39

8 year old child I reckon.. the attempt at joined up writing suggests a child of that age. The spelling suggests a bit younger..
So it's either a 8-9 year old child who struggles with spelling or a 6 year old whos very good at handwriting.

It's so varied.

Dd1 could have written that in reception.
Ds would have had to be especially inspired to produce it in year 6.
They got the same English language GCSE grade.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/04/2024 00:41

It's difficult, I have marked KS3 and 4 work similar.

Kittylickingplate · 13/04/2024 00:42

Very neat hand writing but the spelling suggests dyslexia. 10 year old dyslexic is my guess

Twofifty · 13/04/2024 00:44

9

kwetu · 13/04/2024 00:47

I would say age 5-6 as it's very much like my granddaughters current writing.

stitchinguru · 13/04/2024 00:47

Just like all other elements of child development, individuals get to grips with writing skills at their own pace. Boys, in particular, do not naturally take to ‘pencil and paper’ as a means of communication.
I have taught in primary schools for over 30 years and this could be the script of anyone from 6-11.
To the trained eye, there are many positives here (applying phonics to build words and some awareness of sentence boundaries etc).
Please don’t get hung up on opinions of people who claim to be experts, especially people who refer to ‘joint up’!!!

6?

Readytoplay · 13/04/2024 03:19

Anywhere from Y2-Y5 depending on any learning difficulties (such as dyslexia), so 7-10 years old

90yomakeuproom · 13/04/2024 03:26

6 or 7

It's a strange question as like others had said it's varies so much and depends on so many factors making it 'normal" for a big range if ages.

DS1 could have written that but with better spelling and neater writing in YR, DS2 would have been into junior school most likely and would reluctantly have written that much and his spelling would be similar.

Borracha · 13/04/2024 04:40

The handwriting is miles better than that of my 8 year old. But my son would not make the majority of those spelling mistakes.

garlictwist · 13/04/2024 04:43

I don't have kids so this is a total guess but 7? He has lovely handwriting but his spelling is dubious.

TeeBee · 13/04/2024 04:44

6/7
