Micro-feminism, anyone?

If I don't know what sex someone is, I always refer to them as "she"

If I'm addressing a letter to two people I always put the woman first.

Yours?

I refuse to address letters to Mr & Mrs <his initial> Surname. I had many an argument about it with my old boss.

Husband and I have the same initial and I still get annoyed when I get mail addressed that way.

JingsMahBucket · 12/04/2024 19:06

@CurlewKate I also do similarly by saying something akin to “Sisters and brothers” or “Daughters and sons” therefore deliberately putting women first.

TerfTalking · 12/04/2024 19:10

I also do this, thought it was just me being a passive, aggressive and irritable middle aged woman. I also absolutely will not use Mrs even though I’ve been happily married for over 30 years, men only have one option, so as far as I’m concerned so should women, Ms.

PauliesWalnuts · 12/04/2024 19:15

I always put women’s names first.
I’m a Ms.
My summer pots are always suffragette colours.

I always assume a driver being an idiot is a man.
Also always put the woman first when writing a letter.
I also always call a cow/horse/dog etc she when talking about them (hope that makes sense)

I always assume that a twattish driver will be a man.

I'm almost always right. 😂

Oh god, I LOVE this. I’m a bit summer potter and hanging basket lover. I’m going to copy you on this one, it’s fab x

I made a display about what jobs you could go on to do with my subject at school. I made sure that all the traditionally ‘male’ jobs had pictures of women doing those jobs and vice versa.

I am buying plants today for my pots. They will be suffragette colours too. Thank you for the inspiration.

I don’t do anything, a lot of people in my circles are stressed and trying to put on a brave face. I’d rather put my energy towards uplifting people instead of correcting them at this point.

MinnieCauldwell · 13/04/2024 08:40

I try to support womens businssses when possible. Just had female decorators in.

MinnieCauldwell · 13/04/2024 08:42

Thinking about it it would be good to have a thread of businesses that we could support. Pip and Nut peanut butter is owned by a woman, she was on Dragons Den.

GordoStevensMustache · 13/04/2024 08:46

I tend to refer to inanimate objects as he instead of she. The use of she to refer to cars, boats etc has always annoyed me.

I teach several (very gendered) languages, which are often inherently sexist in some ways (e.g. the plural 'they' pronoun is automatically masculine even if referring to a group of 1000 women and one man). Pretty much every grammar teaching resource puts the masculine first. So I've started making a point of a) pointing out the inherent sexism of that, and b) putting feminine first whenever I can.

Most of these examples don't involve correcting people though. They are just people's own choices about how they use language.

If people in your circles are going to be stressed by suffragette coloured flowering plants or getting a Christmas card addressed to Mrs and Mr, then might I respectfully suggest they might need to seek some help....

I love these. I've been known to say things like "Boys can be doctors too" just to change the narrative. But im inspired by you all!
