Planning consultant or architect...or is there a better way?

On a super tight budget with our house extension, which needs planning permission as it's outside permitted development rules. What would be the most cost-effective way to deal with this? I wouldn't feel confident drawing up plans myself and neither of us have had to deal with planning before. It's only a single storey extension, about 8m2. Don't want to waste money unnecessarily but we definitely need help from someone! Any advice very welcome.

Architect, for the design skills and ability to negotiate & understand planning and put a cogent argument . Architect will produce plans, realistically listen to your design and tell you if it’s realistic and how to successfully pitch. Money well spent

An Architect will be able to create cost effective use of space, they are used to the local planning authorities and will know what will get passed without problems. They will also understand the type of foundations and structures required. They may sound more expensive than a drawing technician, but you are paying for 8 years of qualification and they are professionally insured.
If it’s a small project contacting a small local practice is probably a good idea, less overheads and they will know the local area and any restrictions.
