Anyone else have cars that endlessly go wrong?

It's obviously expected as I'm in a cycle of buying cheap cars (all I can afford), but it also means I seem to have continuous issues with my car and always dreading for something to break/go wrong.

Anyone else relate? Feeling SAD for myself.

I hear you op
I don't think it's just older cars that have problems; over the many years we've had one year old cars, new cars, cars that are five or more years older and all have had something up with them. It's only my opinion, but they are just not made the same anymore , cheaper parts and so on and prone to more problems , rattles and leaks.
You rarely see people fixing their own cars either
They are too complex for that , unless it's really old and easier to access the engine , they have the right tools and so on.
Dealerships have also been bad at solving problems, only interested in selling you cars but maybe that's just us!

Yep, me. I swear my car can't go longer than a month without wanting to visit my mechanic again 🙄

It's fully serviced every year and no expense is spared yet she still wants to stay in car hospital 😢 so frustrating as I've probably nearly spent what I paid for her but sometimes it's better the devil you know 🤦‍♀️

Ive always had cheap cars. Always Toyotas and they keep running and running. Had the last one for 16 blessed years with never an hitch and he was 10 when purchased. Seriously, get a Toyota!

what car you got?

but simple if cheap, like the base fiesta, and even better Ford Ka - hardly anyhting in those cars to go wrong and if they do, its cheap

My fiesta didn't get the memo!

It's just disgraced itself by failing its MOT on a corroded break pipe and a broken lambda sensor and it's going to cost £300 to fix!

Previously had a Peugeot, replaced the cambelt and a few months later the head gasket went.

i was going by what others had when and where i owrked - the cars were at least 5 years old and one was 10 years old

Having said that, i've noted many cars on the roads well over ten yrs old and look good from a distance

the pot holes and messing up old and new cars alike - the more expesnie the car the more espenspive the repair

@Greengagesummer65 I've heard that about Toyotas! I have a Hyundai.

Thankfully not. My Hyundai has always been excellent and my old Fiesta was too.

DH had a run of bad luck with Ford though and won't buy them again.

WhiteLeopard · 12/04/2024 09:06

Sometimes it seems to be the individual car rather than the make. We had a Ford for years and it was v reliable, then we got another and it had one thing after another go wrong and cost us a fortune when it was still a lot newer / fewer miles than our previous one had been. Our current Mazda is good (touch wood!).

waftabout · 12/04/2024 09:10

I'm afraid this is how I got into buying new/nearly new cars on HP/PCP.

I was buying car after car that cost me a fortune in repairs.

I didn't know a trusty mechanic, didn't have anyone who knew about cars and I was sick of it.

I spend a lot more per month now but I have almost no surprise bills, cars under warranty and no day to day stress just a predictable payment. I don't pay for services either so another cost saved.

I know that's not possible for everyone and some hate car finance but it's taken so much stress away.

JackThayer · 12/04/2024 09:22

My Jaguar E Pace. She's been nothing but trouble. And obviously everything is mega expensive to fix. But she sure is pretty.

GobbolinoCat · 12/04/2024 09:27

Silly question but is corroded break pipe serious?

GobbolinoCat · 12/04/2024 09:29

Op I'm the same im paying a good chunk of hundreds each year to keep an old car on the road but I can't afford better.

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/04/2024 09:59

No because I have bought Toyotas which are very reliable. I bought a secondhand Corolla when I was PG with DS. Apart from the handle breaking and it could be repaired by us as it wasn’t electric it had no issues ever it only had to be scrapped when someone crashed in to it when she was parked minding her own business in a car park. He was about 11 by then and it was so ancient it didn’t even have an air bag.

Currently have a Yaris. DH has a VW Passat and it’s never been a bother but it was bought when it was just a year old so not a runabout.

Ha! I can so relate. I wish I had spotted this thread before I started mine (https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/5048523-anyone-else-got-a-leaky-tesla). I have barely had my car to drive over the past 6 months because it keeps leaking. Tesla main office seem to think that it is normal wear and tear to drive round with over an inch of water sloshing around above a massive electric battery. At the moment we are in warrantee, but I have no idea what we will do once it ends.

Anyone else got a leaky Tesla? | Mumsnet

This is a long shot. We bought a model 3 Tesla three years ago. In the last year it has started to leak really badly when it rains with up to over an...
