Is there a mouse in the house?

Hi all,

Any recommendation for a good pest (mice) control person please? How much would they charge (roughly)? Is there a guarantee?

Our daughter who came to visit saw a mouse twice: once on the landing and the other time in the kitchen, both late at night. We put 2 ready baited traps (under the stairs and kitchen) but caught nothing. We haven't seen any mouse yet. Could have been her imagination? I wish 🙏

I intend to buy some pellets asap as some good people advised so on mumsnet.

I think I suffer from OCD when it comes to cleaning and I feel that I am going mad!

In my experience, Rentokil do a good job. If mice have been seen, then get it sorted sooner or later.

A cat helps.

The council usually have pest control services for a reasonable fee. Check your council website.
I used my local council previously for a rat problem in the garden. It was relatively straightforward

See if your local council offers subsidised pest control. I think I paid about £40 which covered three visits when I had mice.

Get a torch and have a look around the edges of skirting boards and walls, furniture etc for droppings. It will be fairly obvious if you have a mouse.

Our council won't do mice at all, they do rats apparently. I was quoted £140 by Rentokil, ruddy rip off. I managed to get rid of him by myself in the end.

You're best off asking on a local FB group as a lot of pest control is small businesses. That's how we got ours. He was good & v thorough but pricey, think it was £190 in the end (for one bloody mouse!).

Our council will do mice but had a month's waiting list when we needed them so not very helpful.

@Cazpar is right although contrary to what ppl say here you can just have one mouse - we did - which can make the droppings harder to spot.

I've had only one mouse in the house on the odd occasion, brought in by next door's cat and dropped. They tend to have a fave hiding place I've found, so check behind wardrobes and cupboards for droppings. If you have hard flooring you could try scattering flour or chalk at night and look for footprints...
