7 year old vomiting for 8 days. Should I ring GP?

Firstly, apologies if this is a stupid question but my 7 year old very rarely gets ill so I have little experience of managing illness in him and what is normal or not.

It started off 8 days ago with a very high temperature which knocked him out, he didn't get out of bed for 2 days which is very unlike him as he has ADHD and is Autistic so is on the go non stop. This is the only time in his entire life I can remember something stopping him in his tracks like this.

On the second day he would vomit occasionally. By the 4th day the temperature had gone and he was more active around the house but still not up to going out but now had a sore throat and muscle aches and no appetite.

But whenever I try to get him to eat or drink anything he vomits straight away. It's just water or bile coming out at this point as he hasn't had any substantial food for 8 days.

I'm getting quite worried as the temperature has gone but he still vomits whenever he eats or drinks.

However due to him being Autistic and having ARFID negative experiences around food can make him afraid of food and sort of feel sick psychologically so it's hard to tell which is which.

Is this something that's worth contacting the GP over or should I just let it run its course?

He seems mildly dehydrated but is managing small sips of water every now and then without vomiting but does vomit the water back up more than half the time.

Absolutely seek medical assistance!

VioletPickles · 11/04/2024 07:56

Yep. I would. That’s a long time for vomiting.

FoodAnxiety · 11/04/2024 07:57

Yes, definitely ring the GP. He may be dehydrated.

Is he weeing? What colour is his wee?

He definitely needs the doctor.

kiwiane · 11/04/2024 07:58

Yes he really needs to be seen asap.

Irishdragon · 11/04/2024 07:59

Yes, today !!

Chrispackhamspoodle · 11/04/2024 08:00

Call 111 now and speak to them. The bile is worrying and he will be dehydrated.

berksandbeyond · 11/04/2024 08:01

I mean, I would have got medical help like 3 or 4 days ago tbh!

ImNotThereAmI · 11/04/2024 08:01

8 days for anyone to be vomiting is ages, especially a child. Call 111, I wouldn’t be surprised if they say take him to a&e

Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop · 11/04/2024 08:02

If his last wee was over 12 hours ago then go straight to A and E. I would get stuff ready for A and E just in case.

Theunamedcat · 11/04/2024 08:02

They will hopefully give them anti sickness meds don't let them fob you off with "it's just viral it will pass" it's been 8 days that's long enough to require intervention

Dehydration itself can cause nausea and vomiting, and children particularly can get trapped in a vicious cycle of getting more dehydrated and less able to keep things down. This can require medical attention to break the cycle. From what you say it sounds like he needs to be seen today. I think if I couldn't get through to the GP immediately they open I'd be calling 111.

Thank you everyone, I will ring GP at 8.30 and if no luck then I will ring 111.
He has been for a wee about an hour ago but his wee was quite dark. He's just had some more sips of water and kept it down but he looks like he might be sick while he's doing it.

We went to a&e after ds5 had been vomiting for 3 days, day and night, and stopped weeing. Spoke to gp first who said to go to hospital - some kids get stuck in a cycle of vomiting and need anti emetics (which the gp said they couldn't give, but hospital could) to break the cycle.

ImNotThereAmI · 11/04/2024 09:07

If this happens again op I’d get a child seen way before 8 days of this. Good luck, hope he’s better soon

DoYouLikeCats · 11/04/2024 10:54

Thanks everyone. GP wasn't too concerned as he's not too dehydrated. She thought his stomach is just overly sensitive after the tummy bug and has given omeprazole.

We used ice lollies in this situation. Yogurt lollies of he tolerates dairy (he may not after a bug).

You eat them slowly so the stomach doesn’t revolt. They Stay hydrated and get some nutrition in.

Thanks for letting us know how you got on with the GP, hopefully he'll be on the mend very soon!

Josette77 · 11/04/2024 20:46

Dark urine and vomiting for this long is concerning.

I'm surprised the GP seems fine with this.

TheMuskratOfDestiny · 11/04/2024 21:49

Yeah I'd be pushing harder OP. He sounds very dehydrated and 8 says without eating his electrolytes will be very low.

You need to eat and drink to survive and he is just 7.

Id want him in hospital on IV fluids and nutrition as his ARFID is going to make recovery so much harder.
