Newspapers - paper copies

I know most of us catch up on the headlines online this days, but I wondered how much a paper copy of a daily newspaper is these days?

Also if you get a daily paper why do you prefer it to a digital copy?

My parents, in their 70s, buy a newspaper and tell me news stories from it that I read online the day before. My DP buys one purely for the crossword. I wouldn't buy one but if I'm on public transport, I like to read the free metro.

I get vouchers for free papers at Waitrose. Saturday telegraph is £4 and £3 for daily.

I buy the cheapest deal for hard copy of weekend stuff that gives me access the online on a daily basis - this is Australia. It works for me as neither The Age or Australian (right wing or what?) is anything to write home about, but the weekend stuff is OK and review arty shite very good.

I read the Guardian online for nowt. Never ever get sucked into subscribing as it's mind-buggeringly expensive and they cut you off per view very quickly when using the phone app.

Do you mean the Guardian weekly magazine? It's not great is it? I would pay decent money if I could get a UK Saturday Guardian delivered in Perth, in fact I ask any friends visiting the UK to bring me back weekend newspapers as I miss them so much! I find Aussie newspapers to be pretty awful. I remember when I lived in London you were able to buy newspapers from all over the world in Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus, but I can't seem to buy any UK papers here in Perth, with the exception of the International Mail and Express, no thanks! If anyone knows of a way to get decent UK papers here please spill!

We get guardian Saturday delivered, it arrives before we make coffee on a Saturday morning, otherwise we would have to be up, dressed, 25 minute walk there and back to newsagents. It's a small luxury that we will not give up.think Saturday edition is £3.80 now, plus delivery charge.

We get the guardian weekly delivered because it gives a good selection of previous weeks news and summaries on big stories and pay online subscription.

Kids get a weekly news magazine delivered as well.

Why do we pay all this? Many reasons

The Guardian is independent not owned by an evil media overload (I know it still has issues but at present it's not owned by Murdock or Dubai which is slightly better) plus it doesn't wind me up as much as the other broadsheets. And independent journalism costs money I don't want all of our news to be dependent on online advice revenue

It's been shown you remember things better if you read from paper not a screen

When you read online you only tend to click on stories you are drawn to but by turning a newspaper page we read a more varied selection, some of the smaller articles are fascinating and don't come up on the online feeds.

We discuss things with and without the kids, and with a paper copy you are all looking at the same story rather than lost in your own personal algorithm selection.

It's good, legally, to get editors to put things in print, in the UK it becomes legally binding once it's printed, it's supposed to be the same online I know.

It's a calmer, slower way if taking in news.

I happily pick up weekday copies as well, particularly if there is a story I want to digest properly (recent one about internet/screens and teenage mental.health for example was a particular household relevant that was read out and discussed over dinner).

I feel it makes us more informed, it definitely inspired good, sometimes heated but all respectful, conversations. And I want to contribute to journalism and news distributers, it's getting too easy into fake online it's essential for democracy that news remains trustworthy.

Kids magazine has a good selection of feel good stories. It's good for positive balance.

Private Eye is also good.

And we like a lot of the paper, not just news, puzzles, sport, opinion, lifestyle, problems, food, week in pictures, letters, we make good use of almost the whole thing.

And I just like a paper always have.

eurochick · 11/04/2024 07:42

What is the kids magazine @frozendaisy ?

SevenSeasOfRhye · 11/04/2024 07:51

DH gets the Daily Mail Grin and it's £1.10.

I get my news online.

Bjorkdidit · 11/04/2024 08:30

You can see the prices of all the national dailies here. Weekend ones cost more

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-68785640

It's a different way to consume news, that's not necessarily inferior because it's slower than online. It's nice to read something that's not a screen for once.

I get the iWeekend paper, which is £1.60 I like the puzzles and also the printed TV listings, book reviews, travel and health/wellbeing features, as well as 'the news'.

The headline in the Guardian reads: Biden declares 'iron clad' support for Israel amid fears of Iran attack and The headline in the Daily Express reads: Radical NHS plan to fast track care and free up beds

Newspaper headlines: 'Ironclad' Biden support and 'radical NHS plan'

Wednesday's papers report on US support for Israel against Iran and NHS plans to free up hospital beds.

The Week junior

Bit young for them now really but it's fun and feel good so we keep getting it.

3 new threads this morning about having papers delivered

IvorTheEngineDriver · 11/04/2024 09:54

I only read them in the pub and then for the opinion and feature articles. News I get on line.

Well something's definitely afoot as that thread's been deleted Confused

A ploy by the media moguls to boost sales of print media?

It’s in addition to the Wednesday vouchers. I assume I get them as I had the card when you used to get a free paper if you spent at least £10. Ironically no minimum spend now and I just pop in for a free paper.

Ariela · 11/04/2024 23:36

@ShanghaiDiva I too used to get the free papers, but despite someone showing me at the tills where their free paper voucher was, I still can't see free paper on my card/with my vouchers? Anything I need to search for (if I look for the paper it comes up but have to pay)?

The weekenders were for The Age and Australian. I'd love hard copy of the Guardian Weekend, but not the round-up one.

HeraSyndulla · 12/04/2024 02:50

I pick a news paper up on my way in to work and do the crossword over coffee, like I am now.

Newspapers - paper copies
Ariela · 12/04/2024 17:15

@ShanghaiDiva I just don't have that on my card. I only have a choice of 8 personalised vouchers - which are useless as they're either for stuff I bought in the last 2 weeks OR they are out of stock, but no Newspaper vouchers whatsoever.

BedBugs5 · 13/04/2024 16:42

Personally I’m a big print newspaper fan- especially at weekends. We spend so much time on screens that I find it a treat to sit down and relax with a print paper.

Obviously online is where you go for breaking news, but newspapers are a lot more than that. I much prefer reading longer, feature-type articles on paper. I believe print sales are much stronger at weekends so I imagine a lot of people are similar.

Instantcustard · 13/04/2024 16:48

My dh gets three (paper) newspapers everyday and ds19 reads them too. I agree that it's a completely different experience to reading online.

drawnfrommemory · 13/04/2024 16:53

We get a daily paper delivered. I like it because I like the experience of reading a physical copy, plus I have noticed that the online edition doesn't have all the smaller articles in. DH likes the crossword and the puzzles.

It's a real ritual for me - cup of tea and the paper in bed before I get up and start the day.
