Child benefit rates

Hi, my DS will soon be 18 so his child benefit will stop. Does that mean my younger son will get the higher rate now or will he stay at his lower rate? Does anyone know please.

Currently I get £25.60 for my older DC and £16.95 for my younger DC.

Thanks.

Your youngest sons rate will stay the same till he's 18 x unfortunately they don't change the rates

ElizabethG81 · 10/04/2024 19:58

You will get the higher rate for your second son.

onedayiwillbehappy · 10/04/2024 19:59

I think your second son will get the higher rate.

Needmorelego · 10/04/2024 19:59

@shellyleppard no when a child "ages out" the next child down becomes the "oldest" and gets the higher rate.

Hellocatshome · 10/04/2024 20:00

You get the first child rate for your younger son when your oldest no longer qualifies.

shellyleppard · 10/04/2024 20:00

Needmorelego thanks I didn't realise this

dementedpixie · 10/04/2024 20:01

I think you then get the higher rate for the next in line rather than them staying on the lower rate

Needmorelego · 10/04/2024 20:03

@Fullofpudding you should still get Child Benefit for your eldest until he is at the end of the academic year. It doesn't stop immediately when he turns 18.

Fullofpudding · 10/04/2024 21:05

Ok great thank you. I couldn't find out any information online when I was looking earlier.

What @Needmorelego said.
Child benefit doesn't stop on their birthday, it stops at the end of the school year (last week of August).

But yes, when it stops, your dc2 becomes 'the eldest child' and gets the higher amount.
