Blood pressure…A&E?.

I’ve been tracking with home monitor as per request of practice nurse. Day 3 and readings are very high. 188/110 for example. Tried on DH and he’s getting normal readings. Should I wait out the 7 days, try again in the morning or got to a&e?

Ask 111 for advice or go to walk-in?

Mariannas · 10/04/2024 19:06

Phone 111

Book an appointment with your GP.

If you input those numbers into the NHS site it tells you to get an urgent gp appointment if you are not already being treated for high blood pressure. Or call 111 to speak to a doctor. The advice changes and tells you to conatct 999 or go to a&e if you are experiencing other symptoms such as confusion, blurry vision, chest pains, a fast or irregular or pounding heartbeat, breathlessness, peeing less than normal , nausea or vomiting.
Ive just started on Ramipril for high blood pressure and some of my pressures have been that high, but i havent experienced any other symptoms at the time. Just the occasional heart palpitations.

Auntieobem · 10/04/2024 19:26

You don't need a&e for high blood pressure.

RoseAndRose · 10/04/2024 19:33

Call 111 to get advice from someone you know to be medically qualified

I think that, absent other symptoms, this could wait until tomorrow. But you need advice from the NHS, not randoms on the internet

I don't think you should be giving medical advice. My friend was told by his doctor to go to A and E last week because of high blood pressure.

You don't need a&e for high blood pressure.

Hypertensive crisis is a thing and can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

BarrelOfOtters · 10/04/2024 19:55

Thanks all. I’m waiting on a call back from a doctor. Call handler Suggested I get a cup of tea, sit down and don’t watch anything scary…..

Glad you're getting advice. I came on to comment 'don't wait out the 7 days'

I suspect they will advise you see your GP tomorrow unless you have other worrying symptoms, but you've done the right thing.

Terrible advice

Uncontrolled high BP can lead to stroke/bleed/heart attack. Hypertensive crisis.

Not all people do need A&E but for a lot it probably saves their lives or prevents a worse health crisis.

I would be asking for an urgent GP appointment tomorrow and some BP medication started

Make sure the tea is weak or uncaffeinated. Caffeine can affect your blood pressure. It affects different people in different ways. A strong cup of tea can make mine spike - I suffer high blood pressure and am on medication to keep it down, I don't have any tolerance to caffeine any more.

Joyfulincolour · 10/04/2024 20:07

Agree - you do need to seek medical advice. A hypertensive crisis is a medical emergency & patients are advised to go to A& E.

You don't need a&e for high blood pressure.

And yet I was rushed to A and E, with a Cat 1 ambulance request, when I presented at the GP drop in and they discovered my blood pressure was so high. There was a concern that it could lead to a stroke or heart attack. I was seen almost immediately in A and E and admitted.

So, I'm not sure you should be telling someone to ignore high blood pressure tbh.

I can't be arsed reporting your dangerous and dangerously stupid post but I really hope someone does.

BarrelOfOtters · 10/04/2024 20:13

It’s decaf tea.I’m hoping he’ll say see GP tomorrow. .though given my surgery doesn’t have one at the moment it will probably be A&E tomorrow.

  • I reported the comment for dangerous medical advice but MN have decided they are happy to let the comment stand, as other posters have challenged it.

Hopefully no one will take heed of the comment, as it is potential very dangerous to ignore very high blood pressure.

You do sometimes.
HCP.

Hadalifeonce · 10/04/2024 20:23

When I went to A&E for an unrelated problem, they discovered my blood pressure was high. They said if they couldn't lower it, I would be staying in hospital.

everythingcrossed · 10/04/2024 20:24

My father had several episodes of very HBP last summer (sometimes 210+). Each time, we went to A&E, as per advice, and he was given a drug that sent his BP crashing down to manageable levels. Fortunately, between the emergency medical team and his GP, a new combination of medicine was found that has kept his BP stable since then - I know we have a thing about "not bothering" the doctor but 180+ definitely needs an expert opinion. If nothing else, once the A&E doctors have reduced your BP, they can refer you to a specialist team as a priority.

jennylamb1 · 10/04/2024 20:26

Are you on medication for blood pressure?

iloveautumn3 · 10/04/2024 20:27

I have had high blood pressure since i was 40. I have been on medication ever since. Our local hospital doesn't have an A&E but has a doctor from 8-8 you turn up and wait your turn. No appointment needed.

jennylamb1 · 10/04/2024 20:30

If you're not on medication, I would see a doctor ASAP. I had similar readings plus was getting nose bleeds which haven't had since a kid. Doctor put me on 10mgs Ramipril immediately, as was near to hypertensive crisis.

828Pax · 10/04/2024 20:34

My mum had a very similar reading to yours today. She went to her GP who sent her straight to A&E. She has been there since this afternoon undergoing tests

jennylamb1 · 10/04/2024 20:35

Yes, lots of good advice here, via 111, should hopefully get doctor's appointment tomorrow or A and E tomorrow.
