Tell me about street WhatsApp group.

I moved to my house in August and was put on the street WhatsApp group. So far the entire topic of conversation has been people trying to get rid of their old crap instead of taking it to charity/ the dump. Or the same people always wanting to ‘borrow’ stuff like bubble wrap, after sun, carpet cleaners, onions and other mundane things they can’t be bothered to buy for themselves.
i believe there is a more exciting group that involves a lot of alcohol but I’m not on that one ( sadly).
I bet you all have much more hip and exciting groups than mine.

There's a comedy podcast on BBC sounds where a comedian reads funny extracts from these types of local groups it has neighbourhood in the title.its rather funny 🤣

Wisenotboring · 11/04/2024 18:29

Ours is 80% swapping and bins, but 20% pure comedy gold. I can't give away the exact topics as could be outing but some of the comments have been really hilarious!

Ours is - bins, the fucking builders next door, bins, is your Virgin Media service down?, bins, has anyone else got low water pressure?, bins, lost Amazon parcel, shifty bloke - possibly a burglar, bins.

All of this! Are you on my street lol!

Also the bloke who likes to post photos of himself and family on a beach somewhere abroad, or his holiday beer or holiday view! I worry that my first thought is always “I could burgle your house” even though it’s not in my nature and I’ve never stolen anything in my life!

Maddy70 · 11/04/2024 18:38

I just wouldnt join one. Tbh

Just say you dont like group chats

MadisonAvenue · 11/04/2024 18:43

Ours is made of up the twelve households on our cul de sac and is ok, it’s pretty quiet at the moment but goes through phases of a lot of messages and then nothing for months. Mostly people wondering who’d taken in their parcel although it’s been useful to alert people to local burglaries and car thefts.

The messages that annoy me the most are sponsorship ones, you feel you have to give otherwise you’re judged to be either tight or skint.

NeedToKnow101 · 11/04/2024 19:13

We are four flats and talk a lot about the bins and compost 😂

coolcoolcoolcool · 11/04/2024 19:13

Our street what's app can get pretty colourful. Only last week someone posted 'warning this scruffy woman was seen approaching our house and pressing the ring doorbell, please be vigilant as she was also looking at the car'.

Cue lots of people saying she looks dodgy, she looks very scruffy, what is that in her hand etc.

Turns out it was someone who lives on the road and was trying to see if a parcel had been delivered to the wrong address.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/04/2024 19:20

I live in a small hamlet and our WhatsApp is loads of fun. But we are all friends and like each other.

Nw22 · 11/04/2024 19:24

We have 2. One for the whole street that is the usual have you seen any parcel etc. and another one for a smaller group of us, who also socialise together, that’s a lot more interesting.

JoanThursday · 11/04/2024 19:33

We have two: one for bins/getting rid of stuff/dodgy persons and another called 'where's my child'.

Then there's a sub group at our end of the street which largely involves alcohol. I suspect that other end of the street has it's own boozy sub group too.

Message about getting rid of stuff: it's always the same person who says 'yes please'. You name it, they'll take it. Shelves, mirrors, random bits of kitchen equipment. Last week, it was two cans of Mr Sheen.

😀😀

Whoops!

Ours is quite civilised. Mostly just occasional posts about people leaving their headlights on or a car window down, or the water being off (pipe replacement work going on), the odd lost pet.

Feckedupbundle · 11/04/2024 19:48

We have a village one,but none of my family are on it.It sounds very petty from what I can gather, and I think that I'd last about two minutes before telling someone to get a grip.
I am on a rural farm watch one,run by the local rural police and that's very good,a lot of vehicles and equipment recovered because we know what's been pinched and are looking out for it.

BlancheSaysYes · 11/04/2024 19:55

We don't have a WhatsApp group, we have NextDoor instead and it's full of people moaning about random cars parked outside their houses, bins not being collected, can anyone recommend a gardener/plumber/handyman for a pensioner who doesn't have much money etc etc
Very dull.

AmyandPhilipfan · 11/04/2024 20:15

We have a FB group for our street and have had a couple of arguments in that. I think my husband got blocked by a neighbour once as he disagreed with what she said. He wasn't the only one but for whatever reason he was the only one she took issue with!

Mostly it's posts about 'has anyone taken in a parcel for number 18?' Or asking if anyone wants/has a certain item.

Sometimes it's photos people have taken of foxes or hedgehogs in the street which are always quite sweet to see.

thedendrochronologist · 11/04/2024 20:17

Ours is in no particular order:

1- bins
2- parcels
3 - free stuff
4 - escaped pets
5 - dodgy people/crime/NHW type
6- one woman circulating bigoted memes - racist sexist ageist-

Superlambaanana · 11/04/2024 20:19

I don't have one. Does that mean my neighbours are all slagging me off over whatsapp? 😬

Oohooh · 11/04/2024 20:19

BigButtons · 11/04/2024 12:06

Ah. I was hoping someone would have one full of fights and affairs and gossip.😂🧐

Ours does! Long drawn out fights between neighbours posted for us all to see. Plus a lady who had a brush with death a few years back
keeps us randomly updated on the bucket list she made afterwards.

BeaLola · 11/04/2024 20:47

We have one - mostly it's about bin collections 😅 or moaning about horrible new neighbours who park all their 6 cars badly and do t talk to anyone - or if they do because people complain about their parking and ask them to move a car it's a F off rant before they slam theiir new door.

In the past we've used it to coordinate where we're setting up the street party - Diamond jubilees , Will & Kate wedding etc or eve use it's hot whose house were crashing at on a summer evening for drinks

BeaRF75 · 11/04/2024 20:55

I have lived in my street over 30 years and don't even know most of my neighbours (bar a couple of houses). There's no way in hell I'd be giving any neighbours my phone number, let alone put myself through the misery of a WhatsApp group. Why do people do this?

AhBiscuits · 11/04/2024 21:04

Ours has lots of
'Do you want this old shit I can't be fucked to throw away'
Otherwise it's mostly used for organising the annual Christmas party and summer street party.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/04/2024 21:04

Street WhatsApp groups?!
We just have a village one

InMySpareTime · 11/04/2024 21:12

Ours has "who wants this thing?", lost cats, street parties, Doorbell camera mysteries (who is that man on the street - oh, it's ok he's just delivering the free newspaper), WiFi down, bins etc.
Most usefully, we have a Google spreadsheet with details of trusted tradespeople that have been used by residents. Saves a lot of "who knows a good plumber" posts.

Neverpostagain · 11/04/2024 21:23

Ours is brilliant. Three main topics. Lost cats, pls search garages - bin day - and were hosting a barbeque/ Christmas drinks/ happy Eid pls come. I love my neighbours.

Ambleen · 11/04/2024 21:23

Ours is really friendly and useful. Someone elderly fell in the night and neighbours awake to read the message got dressed and went right round. A flooded household had any help and tools they needed. Get togethers and street parties are organised. Potholes and other complaints to the council are coordinated and very effective. details of tradespeople are shared and all the bin, looking out if a dog gets out, taking in parcels, neighbourhood watch stuff is done in the most neighbourly way. It really conveys the lovely community we live in.
