Are there petrol stations I can top up air using contactless

Hi

I’m away at the moment and have only have my phone with me with contactless payment. I’ve had an error come up on the car to check tyre pressure so looks like I need to top up the air. However when I went to the petrol station yesterday I could only use cash. Are there any brands of petrol station where the air machines take contactless?

thanks

The Sainsbury's garage near me has contactless air

Tesco

Buy an air compressor pump to keep in your car. Then you can top up whenever and wherever you need to.

Keep a £1 in your car but Sainsbury's have a contactless machine.

Every single station I went to whilst maintaining a slow puncture to vet the course of several months was contactless only. Best bet is head for larger or chain filling stations

sainsbury's

Second this but just checking that your car doesn't already have one?

Quite a few I've had/driven in the last 10 years have now replaced the spare tyre with an 'inflation kit' of a bottle of goo and a small compressor.

Bjorkdidit · 10/04/2024 06:31

But I'd also question being away and only having your phone as a means of payment?

What would you do if it broke or was stolen? It seems madness to me to not have a spare card with you.

feliciabirthgiver · 10/04/2024 07:21

By local BP is contactless

EventuallyDecluttered · 10/04/2024 07:30

I agree longer term with buying a small compressor to keep them topped up, I find it easier than doing it on petrol station forecourts. Maybe not if you have to use on-street parking though.

Not to detail the thread, but today I learned that petrol stations charge for air! We live on a British Island (as opposed to the mainland) and all our petrol stations provide free air for tyres. I had no idea that wasn't the norm. How much is air??

BobnLen · 10/04/2024 07:42

Surely a small air compressor is standard equipment to keep in a car.

£1 for about five mins worth.

I suspect just enough to cover the cost of maintaining the machines.

They're powered by the 12V socket in the car so don't need to be plugged into the mains.

Ineedwinenow · 10/04/2024 07:44

Not sure if they will allow this but you could nip into the petrol station, ask them for a £1.00 coin (or however much you need) and get them to charge your card for it, worth asking if your desperate

FawnFrenchieMum · 10/04/2024 07:46

Our Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are contactless for air.

£1 for about five mins worth.

I suspect just enough to cover the cost of maintaining the machines.

Also would go towards the cost of a contactless terminal and fees to take money from people who never have even a tiny bit of cash on them.

OP sometimes the petrol station air pumps are operated by a token that you buy inside or might also be given for free if you buy a certain amount of fuel, but it's obviously very much on a case by case basis.

Seeline · 10/04/2024 07:47

I still carry a good old fashioned foot pump in my boot, just in case my electric pump stops working.

liveforsummer · 10/04/2024 07:52

Near me all of them do however I'm sure some older or more rural ones might not. Best bet is just go and see. Explain your problem if they don't and hopefully they'll help

msbevvy · 10/04/2024 07:57

Have you taken a good look at the tyres to make sure there isn't a nail or something in one of them?

Whenever our car has come up with this warning we have had a slow puncture which needed fixing at Quik Fit.

TheAirRunningOut · 10/04/2024 08:07

Thanks all, I’ll try the bigger chains
