What films do you like but are a bit off?

Films I really enjoy and have watched many times, but they are (cough) problematic.

Pretty Woman - love it but it does majorly trivialise prostitution and supports men buying women

The Parent Trap - WTAF. Parents split and take one twin each and don't tell them or ever meet up?

Breakfast at Tiffany's - it's not a comedy! Holly was a sexually exploited child bride.

Gone with the Wind - dear lord, the cover up of slavery is awful.

I'm sure there are others ...

American Pie - I know it is absolutely horrendous but I find it hilarious

Original teenwolf- I listened to a podcast with a quote that Stiles asks Scott if he’s about to come out - in less eloquent terms- but then he tells him he’s a werewolf (which is more acceptable than being gay lol)

Overboard - Disgruntled carpenter claims women from hospital?!?

I could probably name more lol

DeanElderberry · 09/04/2024 11:31

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. All of it really, starting with choosing Millie. But oh, the dancing at the barn raising.

Oh yes. The premise is awful, the whole kidnapping the women.

The dancing sort of helps make up for it

@AGodawfulsmallaffair I do too 😂 And they got married in real life is like the icing on the cake to me 😂😂

EmpressSoleil · 09/04/2024 12:34

I also really love Overboard, but yes it's horrendous really what he does to her!

Sleeping with the enemy. I rewatched it not long ago and for one, I hate how she leaves her abusive husband and straight away has a "love interest". Spend some time alone woman! Then, after their date when he's kissing her on the stairs and tries to go further, she has to tell him "no" 3 times before he gets off her! Then she's the one apologising the next day for her behaviour!

Imgoingtobefree · 09/04/2024 12:47

Many older films are problematic. But they were a product of the times we lived in.

I still enjoy (most) of them. I actually like watching them and noticing how things have changed - that’s part of their appeal now for me.

I totally agree with all the examples given. The Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo was considered the top rated film of all for many many years. The ‘hero’ James Stewart now just look like a controlling stalker.

ichundich · 09/04/2024 12:47

Carry on Camping. More than a bit off!

MoneyWhatMoney · 09/04/2024 12:55

So many of the films from my teens.
Cruel Intentions.
The devil wears Prada
Sweet home Alabama

And older ones like Dirty Dancing.

And an absolute favourite of mine - Calamity Jane. Brilliant songs but I'm so glad times have changed

I know! Well, not married, but together for decades!

Rantypanties · 09/04/2024 13:03

Dangerous minds. When I first watched it as a teenager I didn’t see the white saviour part of it, I just wanted to be a cool teacher who didn’t play by the rules….!!

SOxon · 09/04/2024 13:07

Any James Bond film - ladies with spark are bumped off -

timegoesbysoso · 09/04/2024 13:50

Blind Side is awful for white saviour but I also enjoy it for Sandra Bullock

Mrs Doubtfire: Useless, lazy, cock-lodging husband gaslights his ex-wife and tricks his way back into her home by adopting older-woman face, then becomes the husband he always should've been and everything is fine.

So wrong and terrible and abusive and awful. But so fucking good.

greezelouise · 09/04/2024 14:06

Big - obvious reasons

Carousel - woman makes a very bad choice of partner

Hasn't Big got a grown woman sleeping with the 'young boy' or at least attempting to?

Shallow Hal, I laugh even though I know I shouldn't.

I came on to say Seven Brides. It's not just the fact that a) the oldest brother goes in to town and brings back a wife like he would a cow/bag of spuds, b) the wife is then expected to cook and clean for all the men and c) the younger ones kidnap all the women. But then the kidnapped women end up falling for their kidnappers after all and everything's fine.

But the dancing is brilliant and the songs are (probably unintentionally) comedy gold (I'm a lonesome polecat- Can't tell your vows To a herd of cows etc)

GR8GAL · 09/04/2024 14:22

Easy.

Blazing Saddles.

When people try to tell me its riddled with racism, I remind them that the plot follows two interracial friends teaming up to rid their community of a band of bigots who are portrayed (rightfully) as complete morons.

One of the greatest films of all time IMO.

100% 😂

FakeMiddleton · 09/04/2024 14:24

Original Overboard is on sketchy ground but is a damn sight better than that buttcrack Anna Faris remake

HolyMoly24 · 09/04/2024 14:25

Bring it On is a guilty pleasure of mine but it hasn't aged well!

The one cheerleader essentially gets sexually assaulted by a male cheerleader who is lifting her and it's just one big joke. There are other eyebrow raising moments too but that one in particular shocked me

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 09/04/2024 14:26

Ghostbusters. There's some unsettling stuff in there by modern standards but I don't actually care. It's brilliant.

Blazing Saddles is Mel Brooks's masterpiece and the greatest anti-racist film ever made.
