Replacing something you have lost...

I bought my very first pair of Ray-bans back in 2012. I was a student and remember waiting for my first pay day from my very first job to buy them, and they were £125 or £130. I loved them and wore them every summer, and after summer ended and I finished studying in 2014, they stayed in my drawer - I never really wore them again because the following summer, I bought a new pair of sunglasses and since then, I buy a new pair every summer.

Late last year, I remember taking them out of the drawer, putting them on, and thinking, "Wow, my style changed since buying these". I still loved them but I'm not sure what the hell happened to them after that. I've searched my bedroom high and low, and there's no way they would have ever left my room, so I can only think that I've thrown them away accidentally, as they may have gotten mixed up amongst some boxes I had in my room, and to say I have been devastated since is an understatement.

I want to get a replacement pair, as they're still available, just to fill that void. They will be exactly the same, just not the ones I purchased in 2012.

Please make me feel better and tell me if you have ever done anything like this and replaced something you have lost, so I know I'm not the only one.

I'm not sure why you are replacing them if your style has changed so much, save the money and enjoy the memories.

Maybe she wants to sell the old ones to use the money for some that ARE her style?

Not lost, but a few months ago I dropped a lovely mug and it smashed. I rarely actually drink from it but I really liked the design and it had been a gift.

I trawled vinted and replaced it - I still know it's not "my" mug but I'm glad I did.

I lost my favourite Tiffany pendant and then discovered it was no longer made. After a couple of years I eventually found a genuine replacement on ebay. I paid pretty much what DH had paid for it originally!

I bought some wireless earbuds, a real treat for me as they weren't cheap. I went to the supermarket wearing them, came home, put the shopping away and started tidying up.

I was only half listening to my audiobook, but at some point I realised I only had one ear bud in. I have searched every inch of my flat and cannot find it, but my carpets are black (it's a rental) and so is the earbud!!

I'm 99% sure I still had both when I got home and I'll find it when I move out and empty the place of furniture, but it's been years and it's never turned up Sad

Back to wired earphones for me as I can't be trusted!

Why do you want to replace something you never use?

Valid8me · 09/04/2024 08:22

I'm another onr who can't see the point in replacing sunglasses that you never wear.

I don't really get why you need a new pair every year either but that wasn't your question 🙂

I've just replaced a brand new pair of £60 grooming scissors I drove myself mad looking for in the house. I needed them and paid again for a replacement pair. Two weeks later I found them in a backpack I'd packed for the dog to go away. I also lost the only bra I can bear to wear and have had for about 10 years replaced it with a bra that was hideously uncomfortable and again, found it packed in a bag I'd not unpacked, after being away. So bags are now my go-to finding place. I realise that I need to add in to my household annual budget around '£200 for replacing things'!

@PenelopeTitsdrop1990 why would she buy a pair to replace them then sell them?

I bought a replacement vase that I smashed from eBay. I know it's not my one but I'm still glad I did it.

I am at the point of replacing a sentimental bracelet which was a present from my best friend, I think I may have left it in a hotel somewhere but I had tried to recover a left item from a hotel before and never had any luck.

I am sad to read that even the "same" replacement will not feel the same ☹️

I had to move out of my abusive mother's quickly and left a lot of my things and also something belonging to my great grandmother which I would have liked. I've recently been on eBay and have replaced them and I feel happy that I can look at them and feel as though I have the original items in my home.

🤔 Buy a new pair, to sell, to replace the old pair repurchased for a pair that are her new style. Okay....

I can’t imagine being so wasteful, or eco unfriendly, as to replace something every year just for the sake of it.

My sister gave me a bracelet for my 40th from a jeweller that since went out of business. It was very delicate and I lost it when on holiday doing the bloody laundry! Think it found its way into a massive tumble dryer.
I found a replacement on eBay, was absolutely delighted.
Then I lost it.

Found another replacement on Vinted, again, delighted.

Teen DD says one day, oh I have this bracelet in my bag I think it's yours!! Despite me asking her to check, more than once, as I thought I'd been really careful with the first replacement.

Now I have two, that's better than none! I was pretty cross though.

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories, I feel less crap about situation. I don't know if I'll ever find my sunnies again but like I said, there's no way in hell they could have left my bedroom so it's a mystery.

To adress some comments, these sunglasses in particular just remind me of my university days, it's probably not something anyone else would understand really but loved them. I found a pair online, and will buy them. Smile
