Is 52 too old to open a S&S ISA

From my reasearch I'm being told S&S are for the long haul of a minimum 10 years.

I'd be able to leave for that time, but likey want to release by 15 years. Is it too risky?

Or at my age, should I just put in a decent cash ISA?

No that should be fine. However what's the money for and how much?

Make sure you don't put all your eggs in one basket and have a fund with lots of stuff in it.. Vanguard are excellent for this or HSBC world global or fidelity etc.

I do about 70% in funds like this and 30 in what I call my gamble funds eg riskier.

I think it’s because they always say the market cycles in 10 years so while stock market is low now it will cycle up to a high again in 10 years. I’m same age and waiting to see if financial advisor recommends this when I see her next week or just to add to another cash isa as I’m trying to get a retirement plan in place for a modest income at 55 incase health deteriorates further

Really depends on your attitude to risk. If you are happy to possibly lose money, but likely gain significant money in the 10 - 15 years, then S&S is good. If not then cash as it will not lose money, but may well not keep pace with inflation, and the growth will probably be less.

It depends if you have sufficient cash savings elsewhere to cover you.

You don't want to risk a stock market crash and having to withdraw a lot when the market is low. But if you are happy to leave your money invested for the medium term and beyond, I would definitely go for a S&S ISA and aim to beat the cash ISA rates.

Thanks folks, I've opened one today. I've got cash elsewhere to so can afford to sit on this if it drops and ride it out.
