If you sew and if you have asthma, do you suffer?

I have mild asthma, it only really flares up if I have a virus.

However, sewing is a massive trigger, especially patchwork quilting - I take it it’s all the fibres triggering me. I can suffer for days.

I’m wonderful if a good quality mask might help.

has anyone tried it?

@InferiorDesign ask MNHQ to move this to General Health or similar. Maybe Chat for the traffic.

Oh! I had thought I was in chat!

Yes , I wear a mask when I cut/sew certain fabrics. Fleece , wool , velvet etc. I use a lint roller on any surfaces I've used after too. A standard disposable mask seems to work just fine.

Thank you - so simple disposal masks work, or do you opt for something more industrial grade?

It's just a cheap standard disposable one. My eyes were puffy for days after making my first sweatshirt , it was so bad. I can't use the blade on my overlocker either as it sends fibres everywhere and makes me sneeze.

I hope you find something that works.

When my MIL was diagnosed with COPD it was very surprising as she had never smoked, however the doctors said it was most likely due to her years working as a sewing machinist without a mask, inhaling tiny fibres from the upholstery cushions she was making.

InferiorDesign · 10/04/2024 19:41

That’s a sobering thought @TinselSniffer
