Ds just told me he'd touched something disgusting in the garden and pointed out the below on a piece of wood. It wasn't there yesterday as I moved the wood.

First picture is the top (after id poked it) second is underneath after more poking. It was just under a tree.

It's odourless, kind of tough jelly in texture, doesn't appear to be plant or animal (initial thoughts was maybe an egg out the tree or a piece of chicken that a kite or cat had dropped but not those...)
Google suggested slime mould but surely they don't grow to 4-5 com in 24 hours??
What on earth is it?!

Ewww that's grim.

I have no idea what it is, but would guess some sort of fungus.

Andthereyougo · 08/04/2024 19:52

Some sort of fungi maybe not well formed as the ground is so wet?

FacingTheWall · 08/04/2024 19:52

Fungus/mould is more than capable of growing to that size and bigger in that timeframe.

Ozzyskye · 08/04/2024 19:55

Eep, well consider me educated re fungi; I'd never have matched the texture (I also thought it was a melted marshmallow until I sniffed it)

Here's hoping it's not toxic as I took a few good lungfulls in trying to identify it!!

It's not unusual for fungus to appear overnight. That could be a false puffball, in a state of digesting itself, thus turning to slime.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 08/04/2024 20:00

I would say some sort of fungus or mushroom. Best left alone.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/04/2024 20:12

Slime moulds grow quicker than that in optimum conditions - warm and wet.

They're harmless.

CyanBird · 08/04/2024 20:13

You can get jelly type fungus that grows on rotten wood

MaMisled · 08/04/2024 20:19

Another vote for false Puffball.

I feel bad for poking it quite so much now... I have officially anthropomorphised slime!
