Learning French Apps?

Bonjour!

I am going to France in the summer and I don't know any French. Absolutely nothing. Nada. (I studied German at school).

I would like to teach myself enough practical French that I can get by on holiday - how to order in a restaurant, how to ask for directions, going into a supermarket etc. I am not concerning myself with perfect grammar or using different tenses at this stage, I would like to focus on learning enough that I can ask for help if I need it and not hideously embarrass myself.

Has anyone used any Apps that they could recommend for this sort of thing? I have a toddler so a tutor is difficult to manage but I was hoping I could practise with a language app whilst little one is napping or asleep.

Thanks.

Salut!
honestly I’d pick up a phrase book and bash the words into deepl to hear the pronunciation.
Dulingo be had me learning such pointless phrases as ; les hommes sont calmes.
bon courage!

Thank you for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.

I had tried a conversational French book but it went completely over my head but that is an excellent idea!

Merci x

Have a look at the Coffee Break Languages channel on YouTube. They should have that kind of thing & be a lot more practical than Duolingo!

I would second Coffee Break French and also Learn French with Alexa on YT.

Memrise is a much better app than Duolingo, and teaches you far more useful phrases.

For your toddler, a french app for kids could work; for you (adults) I prefer youtube videos so I can relax on a couch and focus on listening. Pimsleur is good or there are french podcasts.
