Nerve damage after wisdom tooth removal...will it get better?

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed on Friday. This is a whole other traumatic story...in short, it took two hours (at the dentist with local anaesthetic) and was absolute hell.
An area is completely numb with deep tingling/ prickling. It's very unpleasant and at times maddening. I went back to dentist earlier and he did a scan which showed a nerve has been damaged. He said it could take up to a YEAR to improve (although he thinks it wont be permanent).
I am quite upset about this. I can't feel most of my lower lip, chin and a section of my teeth and gums. Plus the prickling sensation.
Has anyone had this and found that it healed quite quickly?
I asked about medication to help but my dentist said there's sod all to do except wait...

I had this happen to me when I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth out (luckily under general anaesthetic in hospital). It also affected my tongue with a "pins & needles" type feeling. I was told at the time that as long as the nerve wasn't actually cut it will get better - and it did, but unfortunately it took a long time to completely get back to normal (it's a long time ago now but I think it was at least 6 months). If I recall right it moved from being completely numb to more "tingly" - I bit like when for eg your leg has "gone to sleep" and then you get "pins and needles" before it goes back to normal. Sorry :(

Sorry to hear you are going through this OP. I had the same, but it was completely numb rather than pins and needles. I couldn't feel my tongue at all and kept burning it on hot drinks! I was told that if things didn't get back to normal after 6 months then it would likely be permanent. It did take around 6 months though, I remember because I was counting down to my 6 month appointment. Your lower teeth are near the nerve so it's a risk and I don't think that uncommon.

Thank you so much for replying.
A couple of positive stories!
I guess I just have to hope and pray that it returns to normal eventually. There's a lot of tingling going on so maybe that's a good thing?
It's a horrible overall feeling, though. Also tried to whistle for my dog yesterday and I've lost that power!!
