Kefalonia with pensioners?

NobbyNobbs · 07/04/2024 12:43

My parents want to go to Kefalonia with us as a family and I'm trying my best to cater for everyone's needs.

Has anyone been? We're looking for somewhere not too busy with access to gentle walks to a village or resort for my parents to have some independence.

On the other hand, I want it to be suitable for 2 teenagers who love the pool and the beach.

Air con is a must too.

I'm not having an easy time looking on VRBO or AirBnB as they have lovely places, but too rural. I've been caught out in the past by owners who claim that they are near amenities but the 'near' actually means by car and not on foot.

Can anyone help me?

It’s a while since I’ve been but it is quite hilly, what’s their mobility like?

Pigeonqueen · 07/04/2024 18:50

I was going to say the same as the poster above - it’s very rocky / hilly. Absolutely beautiful but if they can’t walk well there are lots of other places to try. Dassia in Corfu is lovely, lots of easy walks and a nice beach with water sports for teens etc.

Decent mobility but my Dad is pushing 86 and I'd like it an easy walk for them to local amenities.

Maybe Kefalonia is the wrong island 🤔

Would you consider hiring a car? We go abroad with my mum every year to a villa, but mum has very limited mobility - she's now in a wheelchair when out and about, although it wasn't always this way. But having a car has been a lifesaver, otherwise we would be very limited as to villas we could rent.

I went as a teenager and loved it. The gigantic butterflies on "Captain Corelli's" beach (Chorgota beach. Horgota) are amazing, they are my main memory of the holiday. I think if parents are not as mobile as they once were, I would try to find somewhere near there, and then they can then chill out on the beach or at a bar, teens can swim etc. I remember doing a lot of walking through olive groves, but guess that might not be the activity for them! We did hire a car to get us around the island though.

Echo what people say about hills etc. We've been to Kefalonia several times. First time booked last minute and stayed by White Rocks beach in the south of the Island. Near Argostoli. This was flatter but also less picturesque tbh.

We went to the Hotel Emelisse in Fiskardo a few times (far north of the Island.)This was 10 years ago but the pool was lovely and they did a shuttle bus to the village and back every 30 minutes until midnight, so your folks would be able to take themselves off for a few hours. Fiskardo is lovely - far nicer than south of the Island IMO.

TiredArse · 07/04/2024 19:24

Fiskardo is lovely, but I think teens may prefer somewhere like Skala or Lassi?

If you can find accommodation near the beach, where it will be flatter, it may be doable. But there may not be much wandering off for walks to be done?

Yeah we're going to hire a vehicle but my parents are very independent and want to go for their daily walk in the sun, perhaps to a local coffee shop or bar without having to rely on us. That type of thing.

Thanks @Catopia.
Sounds idyllic.

Have you thought about Los Cristianos in Tenerife? Nice restaurants and pubs, good shopping and touristy stuff. My teens loved it and my DP enjoyed it too
