Shein?

I've never brought anything from Shein as I heard somewhere about lead in the clothes. Is it okay to buy children's clothes from there, or is it unsafe?

Never heard anything about that. It's lots of cheap tat really but surely no worse than Primark?

eish · 07/04/2024 09:39

It is an incredibly unethical site / company and therefore I personally avoid. If it’s for the low cost then I’d buy preloved items.

Avoid Shein at all costs - if you are looking for cheap prices then consider pre-loved better brands.

Namenamchange · 07/04/2024 09:40

i got some bits and pieces from there, awful stuff, cheap and badly cut. Wouldn’t buy again.

CutiePatooties · 07/04/2024 09:40

The quality is terrible.

Mixedvegetables · 07/04/2024 09:41

It's not unsafe why would it be but it's totally unethical

StuckInTheSameOld · 07/04/2024 09:41

I was expecting at the very least Primark quality, but if its worse than that...

I've never really had a problem with shein. The odd piece of clothing has been poorly quality but otherwise the quality is no different to your usual high street stores.

Primark quality also varies, and probably has some of the ethical issues too, but at least you can see the items and only select ones that are better made.

Rocknrollstar · 07/04/2024 09:54

I’ve had a few pieces. They are ok. Think Primark.

I love SHEIN 💕 It’s basically Primark online. I’ve bought a few bits for the kids on there and quality is fine, no different to Primark really. Returns are easy so might be worth sending off for a few things to see what you think?

quizzys · 07/04/2024 10:09

The only people who can object to Shein are those who make their own clothes and throw their own pots, and buy their pans from an antique market.

Where do you think Primark and all other big brand names get their workers from? Look at the labels on everything.

Most people cannot afford to buy "ethical" stuff from designer high end shops anymore apart of course for a certain cohort on MN.

Buy where you want to buy that suits your pocket. One Less purchase of a babygrow won't help much, but might help keep food on the table for some.

buswankerz · 07/04/2024 10:13

I love shein. I buy some of dds clothes and dresses from there. It's much better quality than primark.

DaisyHaites · 07/04/2024 10:16

I shop at Shein, even though I’d love to shop ethical and could afford it. There’s no “ethical” brands that offer the range that Shein does and some of it is good quality.

I only buy clothes every couple of years so I avoid fast fashion generally, but I think Shein is much better than the likes of boohoo which sells things that look intended to be worn once.

If someone could match Shein’s range and shop ability, I’d happily pay 2-3x the price knowing it was more ethical - but no one can really compare.

Flatleak · 07/04/2024 10:21

It's much worse than primark. People pretending shein is fine because 'all clothes are unethical' need to give their heads a wobble and do some basic googling.

All returns go straight to landfill
Clothes are made in slave camps
Workers are raped

All when you have a choice. A quick Google of clothing ethics ratings shows it's much worse than primark and big brands

Hoglet70 · 07/04/2024 10:30

It's not worse than Primark. I've had loads of t-shirts from there. Ok, they only last a season but at £5 each you aren't going to complain.

quizzys · 07/04/2024 10:40

The fact that there is an "ethics" rating out there, shows how many outlets and suppliers are all in the same game. I often wonder about the "high end" stuff too, as I took notice of the fact that Covid was spread from Northern Italy due to Chinese workers in their thousands in the "fashion" industry there returning from Chinese New Year. I've never forgotten that, and don't trust any of them anymore.

HelloMiss · 07/04/2024 11:42

Zara/H&m/gap.....all no better

So give it a go and see op. Nowhere is perfect to buy from if you are looking for 'ethical'

And Vinted/pre-lived is often overpriced with overly high postage. And scam you!

Not really.
I don't disagree with the ethics of Shein etc but COVID came to Italy via 2 Chinese tourists, and a German superspreader. Milan fashion week and skiing holidays then did they bit.
The Chinese community (mainly located around Prato) effectively put themselves into lockdown if they had recently returned from visiting family and were very much praised for doing so.

Child labour, cotton picked by slaves and few labour laws. There's a reason why it's cheap.

ADHDHDHDHD · 08/06/2025 05:26

Primark etc all pay tax and have proper contracts with suppliers. They have rules like no child labour etc. shein do what they want and pay no sales tax and airfreight millions of parcels which is really bad for the planet. Hopefully the government will close the tax dodge soon.

river island is going into administration, I’d say directly due to losing sales to shein. river island have lovely shops it would such a pity to lose them.
