Curtain fabric but just the fabric?

Where would I buy 1m
squared of curtain fabric, lined like a curtain, but just the fabric - not made into a curtain or blind? Or do I need to buy the fabric and the lining separately and sew it and hem it myself?

(hoping it’s not the latter as I can’t sew!)

Buy separately. You could always use bondaweb to make seams

Ticktapticktap · 06/04/2024 21:22

You can't, you either but then separately or made up as curtains.

What do you want it for though? You can buy curtain fabric in most fabric shops or online

Thank you both - I want to make a curtain for my camper van, but it will just be held up by two hooks, not a curtain rail. I need to be able to remove it completely every morning. So I just want a simple piece of curtain fabric that I can attach two loops to.

How deep is the window frame? My mum has a narrowboat and has thin cushions that you push into the opening. Completely blacked out and easy remove and use as actual cushions during the day :-)

Might be worth looking in charity shops as they often have donated curtains that could be cut to size?

Blackout curtain fabric won't need additional lining. You can get it in lots of places including Dunelm.

I suggest you buy a curtain sample. Fabric and curtain shops quite often get rid of their samples and they put them in their remnant bins.

I can’t quite visualise what you’re wanting to do, but are you thinking of a kind of removable blind? Blackout fabric would be easiest. I might be tempted to have adhesive velcro across the top of the window, and the other half of the velcro (stitched as well as stuck) to the top of the blind/curtain to improve the fit.

You will need to do some light sewing around the edges of the fabric as well, unless you prioritise function over aesthetic and go for something that doesn’t fray at all.

You can buy ready made camper van curtains, if you google your camper van make and model and window curtains it should come up. Some are squidgy and you jam them into the window recess. I don't own a camper van but watch a lot of van conversion videos on YouTube.

This would work, but make sure that you get the right kind of blackout fabric. There is a type that's like felt, which wouldn't work with velcro because it wouldn't hold up to the constant pulling on and off. The other type is stiffer, and would work well.

@SnakesAndArrows ' reminds me that you can get net curtain tension rods which hold in place inside the window frame under tension. If you want to make rather than buy something, a length of blackout fabric cut to width and made into a tube, with a rod top and bottom, might be the simplest. It would just need one seam, you wouldn't even have to hem the sides.
