We have some fabulous coffee. Still as beans. And need to either buy a grinder and use a cafetière or look at a bean to cup machine.

Husband and eldest two DC all coffee drinkers, I am not.

Any and all suggestions and advice welcome please Smile

How many coffee beans do you have? Is it worth buying special equipment for one bag?

Scottishskifun · 06/04/2024 20:52

If they regularly drink and enjoy coffee then a bean to cup is the way forward!
A de-longhi has some really reasonably priced models for a bean to cup.

I've found it's brought down my spending as actually I can make really nice coffee at home and put it in a thermal travel mug rather then going to Starbucks etc.

bluecomputerscreen · 06/04/2024 21:01

do you have a bullet type thing? if yes you can grind a small amount with that.

You can do it in a pestle and mortar if you have one.

samlovesdilys · 06/04/2024 21:12

We have a Scott slimisimo I think, bought on Amazon for Christmas and we all love it!!

UpsideLeft · 06/04/2024 21:15

I use a Krupps grinder and use a melitta filter coffee machine.

I also have a stove top mokka thing which makes the best coffee of all

I only ever grind my own coffee beans which you can buy from anywhere

Springtimewingtime · 06/04/2024 21:15

Electric bean/spice grinder and a mokka pot.

UpsideLeft · 06/04/2024 21:17

Cafetières are a bit watery for my liking

I'd like a bean to coffee machine but I'm happy with what I have especially as my filter coffee machine has a timer so I can set it up to be ready for work in the morning

ShrubRose · 06/04/2024 21:26

Where did you buy the coffee? Can they not grind it for you?

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/04/2024 21:28

We have 3 x 1kg bags

OP posts:
ChocoChocoLatte · 06/04/2024 21:31

@ShrubRose no, it was a gift - we have used up the retail bags which were already ground and given away one of the 1kg bags to someone else as a present.

Thanks for all the suggestions - I'll give them all a look as if I can encourage the DC to reduce their coffee spends that would be super!

There's a whole discussion about how to get the best coffee at home in this podcast podcasts.apple.com/nl/podcast/the-diary-of-a-ceo-with-steven-bartlett/id1291423644?i=1000639414602 (it's with Matthew Walker).

Advice is to invest in the best grinder you can afford. There's more than that, but that's a v short summary!

ChocoChocoLatte · 06/04/2024 21:42

@gestroopd thank you

For us this came down to how much faff and cleaning up did we want to do after each coffee. Using a cafetiere means cleaning out the grinds every time, Aeropress similar, although it is only rinsing it out, we didn't want to do that after every coffee. Plus we wanted to be able to make anything from espresso to cappuccino.

So we spent on a Delonghi bean to cup which cleans itself, you have to empty the grounds out of the grounds bin after around 10 ish pucks of coffee, the machine tells you to do it. But it is simple to clean and honestly you could empty it daily if you wanted. Dh has at least 4 coffees. It has a detachable milk tank so no cleaning the wand for milk steaming. The milk tank also cleans the spout it decants from after you have made a cappuccino or latte. You can set the milk/coffee ratio plus the amount of water it decants over the coffee puck to personalise it to your cups.

It was for Dh's 40th birthday, it has made over 15,000 coffees (it has a tally) and been going strong for 9 years. We have replaced the rubber O rings once. Currently it is £489 we bought it for £350. If you can there are usually coffee machine shops that have machines to try a coffee from. Dh did a lot of research at the time he bought that one. This is very similar to ours.

Watch a lot of videos on whatever you are thinking of. YouTube is great for this. My one bit of advice is if you like your coffee incredibly hot then prewarm the cups, mine has an area on top for this but I also have a Quooker boiling water tap so I can rinse the cup with boiling water. I love the temperature the coffee comes out of the machine but if you like it like lava it might be too cool on its own. Just worth knowing.

Onewayanoth · 07/04/2024 09:15

We have a fellow grinder and a thermal cafetière type coffee pot. That and a kettle which heats to 90C. Makes excellent black coffee, so good that I’ve pretty much entirely stopped buying coffee out — bar the occasional one obvs.

Electric bean/spice grinder and a mokka pot.

This. I love my Bialetti and honestly, it makes the best coffee.

If you're deciding between a grinder and cafetière or a bean-to-cup machine, both options can be great. A grinder and cafetière give you more control over the brewing process and can be a bit more fun for the coffee aficionados in your family. On the other hand, a bean-to-cup machine is super convenient and ensures a consistently good cup with minimal effort. If you're still hunting for more info, I found a few hacks on how to make coffee not only tasty but also a healthy beverage. or just eat the beans if you need a more instant caffeine hit 😅

Pedallleur · 04/07/2024 10:24

who is drinking the coffee, paying for the beans, cleaning any mess up. Will you buy the beans then they are sat in a cupboard for months? Bean to cup is the way to go for most people. Do you want milk frothed?
A lot of it is just faffing about (men love it. time/money to waste). james Hoffman on youtube is good. I use a Gaggia Classic and have replaced my grinder recently but would prob go bean-cup now
