I'm looking at booking a long weekend for my son's 10th birthday next January, DP says I need to tone it down with the birthdays and 10 isn't a big birthday. I do agree I think the big birthdays are 1,10,13,18,21,30,40 and so on

is 10 a big milestone birthday?

imo of course it is, it's a decade of being alive! Its a big deal

You only get so many birthdays and even then you never know when you've had your last one. Embrace the birthday.

dementedpixie · 06/04/2024 17:42

No its not a big birthday

No I would not think 10 is big, sure if you have heaps of money do whatever you want

BirthdayRainbow · 06/04/2024 17:44

Of course it is. You're going into double figures! 🎂

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 06/04/2024 17:44

It is a milestone yes, double digits. Never done long weekends or anything mind you but you should celebrate however you like. Make your own traditions according to what you enjoy and your budget whether that's having his mates round for pizza or going away.

NoblyBobly · 06/04/2024 17:46

It's no more special than 9 or 11!

I don't agree that 13 is a special one either.

I don't consider 21 a special birthday, coming of age is 18.

pleasecallmeback · 06/04/2024 17:47

Yay, double digits, definitely a milestone birthday. Make the most of his childhood, he's approaching the terrible teens and he won't want to spend a minute in your company.

What sort of weekend were you planning? We did Disneyland Paris, Alton Towers and Chester Zoo - 3 separate children, I'm not that over the top :D

SabreIsMyFave · 06/04/2024 17:48

If you want it to be a BIG birthday then crack on @Whattodo12345help Smile

Your son is the big 1-0 after all!

I celebrated hitting 30 some years ago, and booked a trip abroad for the weekend, and DH got me a nice big cake, and my parents put a nice greeting in the paper. A couple of women at work made spiteful and catty comments saying it was 'stupid' because 30 is not a special birthday. Sad

Well it was to me, and my DH and my parents. I put it down to them being jealous. They hit 30 years old 4-5 years earlier, and no-one was fussed about them, so their jealousy came out as bitchiness! (IMO.)

Happy birthday to your son! 😃

saltyvinegar · 06/04/2024 17:48

He's not going to be a child forever

BettyShagter · 06/04/2024 17:48

18 is the only big birthday I can really think of.

Why would 1 be a big birthday considering the baby won't even know?

Pantaloons99 · 06/04/2024 17:48

I don't think it even matters. If you have the cash and you want to arrange it then just go for it simply because you want to and they'll only be ten once!

I have never seen 10 as a stand out bday tbh, like18 is for example. But as above, who cares. Just do it and tell him it's because you want to and you can afford to 🤷‍♀️

Erm there are quite a few more. 😄

DrJoanAllenby · 06/04/2024 17:49

Why would you want to tone down celebrating your child's birthday?

He sounds like a jealous and miserable old git.

BettyShagter · 06/04/2024 17:49

But anyway, what does he mean by 'tone it down'?

Are you spending more than you can afford?

If so, it doesn't really matter what number birthday it is.

Whattodo12345help · 06/04/2024 17:50

I was looking at a hoeseaons lodge with a private hot tub, trouble is he's at end of January so anywhere fun is closed for the season, we always struggle with his birthday this year we went to London for the day which he loved, year before ninja warrior, year before splash landings at Alton towers, we always do a handful of gifts and a day out for birthdays nothing too crazy

pimplebum · 06/04/2024 18:08

You do you
If you can afford it let rip

my only concern would be if you make big fuss of 10 will he not expect the same on his 11th ?
12th
What do his friends do ?

LlynTegid · 06/04/2024 18:12

Not a big birthday, for those who believe in this idea designed to get you to spend more money.

Maybe 18 is as you are legally an adult, maybe 60 or 65 as the age which used to be the retirement ages, none other.
