Ever machine washed a dry clean only wool jacket?

I bought a lovely wool jacket in a charity shop yesterday. Today I've realised it smells more than a little musty/fusty. Had it on the washing line for a few hours, still smelly.
Thinking about giving it a gentle go in the washing machine on 30 degrees.
Anyone done that? Did it survive?

I think the risk is that either you’d shrink the wool fabric of the jacket, or, if it’s lined, the lining will not wash well and you’ll ruin the jacket. I did this once with a lovely cotton jacket which was unwearable after washing it.

I would Google ‘ getting musty smell out of clothes’ and follow suggestions that don’t involve washing.

I’d hand wash it in the bath, with a wool-friendly detergent. Turn inside out, don’t agitate it too much or rub it, just swill it in lukewarm water, allow to soak for a short while, then several rinses. Reshape it and hang to air dry. I’ve washed several dry clean only charity shop items which I wouldn’t have been too upset about losing if it didn’t work out and they’ve come up fine.

I did google this yesterday, it suggested handwashing as suggested by pp

I’d be worried about it keeping its shape.

Maybe one for the dry cleaner?

If it's a tailored jacket, don't risk it. You've saved enough on the purchase to be able to afford a trip to the dry cleaner.

I'm a knitter. Don't do that to wool 🧶

Cuppachuchu · 06/04/2024 16:46

Yes, I'm probably going to take it to the dry cleaners. It would be a shame to ruin it for the sake of a few pounds (don't know £ , haven't used dry cleaners for yonks).

Yes, I do.

Wool blend comes out fine on handwash + lowest spins (600) + lowest temp.

Don't do it too often, use a fabric shaver if you notice bobbles.

Also wash it inside out!

If you're worried, go to dry cleaner or handwash in bathtub.

Ioverslept · 06/04/2024 17:10

I'd take it to dry cleaners unless it cost more than the jacket

Cappachuchu I can highly recommend Dry Cleaners Secret sheets if you have a tumble dryer with a low heat setting. (Just google the name)

I normally buy from ebay for just a few pounds and have used them for years. I even do my sitting room floor length curtains with them and they come out looking and smelling beautiful.👍
