So.... where is the Emirates Dubai to Glasgow flight off to now do we think? Gust of 58 mph here - goodness know what it is like in Glasgow!

The Edinburgh flights are circling at very low altitudes while queuing

BiddyPop · 06/04/2024 14:47

DH and I have spent the past 2 hours watching flight radar in Dublin - waiting to see if his plane took off so he can get home from Brussels to tonight. It eventually did, but there were a lot of good-arounds and 2 separate "rack 'em and stack 'em" patterns (over Navan and the Irish Sea) where normally they only use one at a time.

But his plane took off eventually so he has gone through security and I am on my way back into the city to do some laundry and food shopping for the rest of the afternoon. And possibly some more plane spotting when I get sitting down!🤣

meanwhile the Kirkwall flight landed at Glasgow with no problems. Loganair presumably thinking its just a light breeze!!

The Jet2 from Faro has set off eastwards.

A Jet2 from Malaga is giving it a go at Glasgow, with an Easyjet from Bristol lined up behind

Chersfrozenface · 06/04/2024 14:53

The Jet3 from Malaga has landed. An earlier EZ also got down OK.

Cannot type, need coffee

Chersfrozenface · 06/04/2024 14:58

Think the Jet2 from Faro may be headed for Newcastle.

Certainly wouldn't fancy being on this wee guy right now 😬

EasyJet to jersey has just taken off and one from stanstead just landed at Glasgow.

Looked a bit blustery as it went by me but the wings weren't going up and down very much and it was only slightly sideways. Doesn't look too bad. It was worse about an hour ago.

I don't know all the ins and outs, and it probably has to do with slots and crew time outs and so on, HOWEVER..... surely they know before take off that the possibility of diverts are very high during a storm such as this.

Is there any reason (other than they have to try), not to stay at departure airport until things clear up? Surely it makes more sense to have people stay around for a while, rather than end up in Gatwick (eventually) and the airline has to pay for them to get to Glasgow or similar diverts?

Having said all that, I do enjoy watching the loop de loops on FR!

One problem with forecasts such as today is the wind is inside
limits one moment and then possibly out of limits the next due the gusts…also sometimes the wind can be inside limits but even so the approach goes out of shape for some reason so a judgement call is made to go-around…or in short, it’s all very unpredictable,.

Given that it doesn’t really make sense to cancel/delay, get crew/aircraft/passengers out of position because you might not be able to land, so the usual solution is to fly as scheduled but carry extra fuel to cater for multiple approaches and a possible diversion.

It’s generally only if the forecast is utterly and permanently out of limits that you’d not fly at all (hurricane force winds, massive snow storms, that sort of thing).

Cornishtoddy · 06/04/2024 14:41

Jet2 failed again - I'm right that they don't do a 3rd attempt - it's a divert now?

Usually depends on the airline’s own rules on the subject.

At at least one it was (probably still is) just two attempts then divert unless following the second go around the weather suddenly and significantly improved.

Bjorkdidit · 06/04/2024 17:20

I saw a flight from (somewhere far away I don't remember) that was supposed to land in Dublin this morning that was diverted to Paris.

Cornishtoddy · 06/04/2024 17:28

Dublin to Edinburgh has just diverted - must be gusty there!

OP posts:
notimagain · 06/04/2024 17:33

FWIW at 1650 Edinburgh was reporting 25 knots gusting 37 knots out of the south/south west, so with their runway direction close to or maybe above limits at times (might be a bit of turbulence thrown is as well which won’t help).

BiddyPop · 06/04/2024 19:02

DH is finally about to do a loop-de-loop over Navan before hopefully landing - 2hr20 delay but hopefully they land in 1 go!

Just a caution that its not radar in the original sense, so it doesn't see everything and don't be alarmed if sometimes aircraft disappear from view...

Enjoy.

I flew from Belfast to London yesterday-I thanked my lucky stars it wasn’t today! I’m not a good flyer anyway.
