I love Indian food, but it doesn't love me

I'm a vegetarian and really love Indian food, but it seems to give me indigestion every time. If I cook it myself I'm fine, but from a take away or a restaurant, always indigestion. I do keep eating it because I love it though. But does anyone know why this is happening?

Are you good with fats? I find in restaurants the ghee used can sometimes be a bit much for me!

It could be the richness - at home you probably wouldn't put half of the butter in that restaurants do.

I was the same . I take two magnesium tablets and that helps

Could it be the cream they use in some curries? The spice level?
Have you tried with tomato based curries instead?
My husband is Pakistani and can't stomach butter chicken because of all the fat in it

I love fats! Eat a lot of cheese.

What do you typically put in a homemade curry?

Onions, veg, maybe paneer. Spices. Depending on the recipe, pulses or beans.

It's the garam masala powder. It's too strong.

LadyAroundTown · 05/04/2024 21:14

Probably the ghee or chilli powder. Or maybe something you only eat with a takeaway?

I love spicy food and have always been able to eat whatever I liked, but a few years ago I noticed certain things started making me ill for days afterwards, specifically kebab starters, bombay potatoes (depending on the restaurant), and a few others. Eventually narrowed it down to Kashmiri chilli, so as long as I avoid anything spicy with a vibrant red hue, I'm still usually OK.

I'm also the same now with Cayenne Pepper, when I used to be able to tolerate that just fine. CP is notorious for triggering reflux and excess acid in people prone to that, and it now does it to me when it never used to.

OK, that's interesting.

Although I use cayenne pepper and chilli when I cook at home, never causes a problem

People tend to use the word “spicey” when what they mean is just hot, as in a lot of chilli powder. I find that restaurant and take away Indian food uses chilli powder in smaller or greater amounts. Often this is the main difference between the dishes on offer. There’s also a standard Indian brown restaurant sauce that you can find on the internet. That’s basically onions, chilli and tomato. I don’t blame restaurants because most people have little idea of what Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani food tastes like. Home cooked Indian food is much more subtle and doesn’t affect my stomach at all.
