Does anyone understand blood pressure?

Mine was 128/77 earlier this year. Seemed a bit high so I upped the exercise and veg. Had it measured again today and it's 128/73.

Does anyone understand why the systolic might have stayed the same and diastolic (which was ok anyway) come down?

GP is not concerned- just trying to understand.

Your blood pressure is normal, Op. Absolutely and completely normal.

1)your blood pressure is normal
2)that tiny degree of difference is within the margin of error for a BP machine
3)please do not obsess about it

It’s not a big difference, you might get it naturally depending what you’ve done beforehand.
Also I wouldn’t count just one check, again it could be higher because you were nervous.

I’m certainly not an expert on blood pressure but I work in a pharmacy and have taken enough readings to know they fluctuate a bit depending on various factor, this is the reason we always take 3 readings when we do them. Before taking a reading you should not have done any exercise, you should have been sitting down for 20 minutes, you shouldn’t take it when speaking and have a relaxed arm while doing it. Try to relax your mind as well. The first measurement is often the highest and then it goes down a bit. I really really wouldn’t worry based on either of your readings, is there a reason you are concerned? It’s always good to try to maintain your health but please don’t stress!
Your pulse is an indicator of how physically fit you are as well - I had a reading of over 100 when I was depressed and inactive. I managed to turn this around after doing regular swimming for 6 months and got my pulse down to around the 60 mark (when resting). The lower the pulse the more fit you are, or so I have been told.
Sorry if that’s not much help.

Your blood pressure is absolutely normal. The variation could be to do with what you've had to drink, whether you have exercised, your position, how big the cuff is that your blood pressure was measured with, whether you had any clothing on at the time, how far up your arm the cuff was placed, how tightly the cuff was applied...it genuinely isn't something to think about.

Summer70 · 05/04/2024 17:30

Completely normal, will vary quite a bit during the day depending on what you are doing & what you've had to eat & drink!

Womblingmerrily · 05/04/2024 17:36

Your blood pressure is not a fixed number. It varies throughout the day with activity, rest, food, drink, temperature and other variables.

In addition it varies according to the cuff you use, where you place it, how you place your arm, whether you have tight clothes above the arm, and the height at which you place your arm in relation to your heart.

The first number systolic is a measure of the heart when it is contracting, and the diastolic is at rest/relaxed.

The first number is measured by cutting off the blood supply to your arm and then slowly letting the blood back in by letting the air out of the cuff - you can feel this in your arm as a strong beat or can hear it 'come back in', Diastolic is recorded after letting out more and more air slowly and watching/listening/feeling when you can no longer hear/see the beat/vibration.

More to the point - your blood pressure is within the normal healthy range for both readings.

Your bp varies ALL the time....depending on the time of day, what position you're sitting in, how you're feeling that day. Yours is perfectly normal.

Thank you everyone, both interesting and reassuring.
