Tooth extraction of a root-canaled tooth

Has anyone been through this? Unfortunately I need a tooth removed, it was previously root canalled (many years ago) but has now cracked beyond repair. Is the extraction a complicated procedure due to the roots having been filled in? Should I opt for sedation? It's a pre-molar.

I’ve had loads of cracked root teeth fillings out. I’ve got shit teeth.

I wouldn’t have sedation, but I’m kind of hardened to it. It’s no different to having a normal extraction.

I had a root filled tooth that was split down the root. I had several numbing injections and my dentist had the senior practitioner on hand should the root shatter. In the end all was fine. They kept me sitting for 15 minutes and examined the site before they let me go home.
it sounded scarier than it was.

Don't worry, it's no different from a regular extraction. I didn't feel that I needed sedation; they numb you up and it's over very quickly. Good luck!

Good to hear it's not so bad. I'd have to pay £500 for sedation. It's whether I'm brave enough to go through with it without IV sedation. Maybe my GP could give me Diazepam to lower my anxiety.

If it's already had its nerve removed and is cracked it's likely to come out much easier, it'll probably come out I. Several pieces though 😁

It cracked badly so there's only a small bit of tooth left. Like a thin 'wall' of tooth. I don't know if that makes it more difficult to get out.

Not at all. Root canaled teeth are weaker than "regular" teeth (part of the reason that a fair amount of root canals eventually fail).

I really think it will be over quickly and you'll be absolutely fine.

I’ve had one out. Numbed up and it came out in about 2 seconds. I felt nothing.

Miloandfreddy · 05/04/2024 18:01

I just had one out but opted for sedation as I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to dentists. Cost me under £100 on NHS and worth every penny. The after effects of the sedation were grand and I got a nice nap in the middle of the afternoon

GoodVibesHere · 05/04/2024 18:03

I don't have an NHS dentist so it would have to be private, which is why there's a £500 cost. I think I'll just have to get it done and see if I can get something from my Dr to calm me a bit beforehand.

I had one and it was fine. In and out in 15 minutes.

Whataretalkingabout · 05/04/2024 18:29

I would definitely not have sedation for this. There are always risks with general anesthetic and it is not worth it in this case.

I wouldn't have general anaesthetic, I was thinking of light sedation Benzos via IV

It'll be fine, I had same under local injection and he got two pieces of it out very quickly.

If your dentist is anything like mine he/she will frighten warn you to death about dry socket. You might feel sleepy afterwards.

I have dentist phobia from childhood treatment but still wouldn't pay £500 for sedation 😳 i have had three teeth out over past few years, two lower small molars were virtually broken down to the gum but came out very easily and swiftly, the other had half the tooth there but had an abscess under it, that was upper third one from the back and was pretty brutal and came out in pieces, felt like took forever but was probably 15 minutes. I was very shaken up by it but would still rather stick it out than waste £500.

Mavisisnotmyname · 05/04/2024 21:39

I had a broken tooth extracted recently and was terrified beforehand but it wasn't nearly as bad as a filling tbh. The waiting before is the hardest part. I think it took about 5 minutes. Be really careful afterwards and follow all the instructions to the letter. If you dislodge the blood clot that forms in the socket it leaves it vulnerable to a dry socket which is very unpleasant. Don't be tempted to prod it with your tongue or rinse your mouth on that side for a few days. Good luck! You'll be fine honestly

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/04/2024 21:42

I had a root canal that failed after a replacement - part of the tooth broke. It was extracted easily and pretty painlessly - no sedation. All I felt was a bit of a tug. I then had it replaced with an implant.

I’ve been waiting for two years on the nhs to have such a tooth taken out under sedation or even possibly GA. I got referred to the nervous patient practice to discuss sedation and they said they wouldn’t do it and have referred me to the hospital now. Am seriously thinking about not having it done at all, I’ve got used to the pain now.
