Genuinely asking for a friend!

She was left this religious picture by her mum and knows it must have had some meaning. Does anyone know who the saint might be? Thanks all.

St Paraskevi

What? St Lucy with the eyes in the bowl. Google her OP.

Paraskevi of Rome

St Lucy is also often shown with eyes, but am pretty sure the writing on this image translates as St Paraskevi.

TheEverlovingFork · 04/04/2024 18:23

St Paraskevi as PP have noted - iconography is similar to St Lucy but they are not the same.

Apologies I stand corrected. (Useless half Catholic childhood, much confusion.)

SpongeBoobBigPants · 04/04/2024 18:37

Yes, the characters are Greek. “Hagia” (saint) on the left, “Paraskevi” on the right.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 04/04/2024 19:14

It's agia, not hagia, Greek for female saint. She is venerated for healing ailments of the eyes. There's a place on Skiathos called Agia Paraskevi, a suburb of Athens and a place on Lesbos.

Wow thanks everyone! I told my friend I would be certain to get a reply on here and she didn’t believe me!

That is absolutely perfect. I needed a saint for the eyes....she was found here

echt · 20/10/2025 22:39

Other saints in charge of eyes are Saints Aldegund, Alena, Alkelda, Clare, Cyriacus, Harvey, Lucy (as mentioned), and Triduana.

There must have been ton of eye ailments back in the day to attract so many patron saints.

Not relevant to this particular and beautiful icon but Saint Deirbhile (Dervla) in Ireland is one for the eyes as well. An interesting story behind it.
