Son passed driving test but can't get added to our car insurance

My son, 17, passed his driving test. He has been a named driver on our car on a provisional license.

Just called the insurer for a quote to change this now he's passed, and they say he can't be added as a named, passed driver (he's been removed from tye policy as a provisional driver). Nor can he be added when he turns 18 in two weeks.

When asked why ,(friends' children are on their parents' insurance) they just said a version of computer says no.

It seems our only option is to cancel our policy, which only started in Jan, and start a fresh with a different company, and possibly face a cancellation charge and hassle. We don't really want to cancel as we have another child insured as a learner driver on our car too and it's just inconvenient.

Has anyone else encountered this? The company is Hastings. It seems odd other big insurers can simply add drivers/update the policy, but we can't add him at all.

Try Marmalade. They do a "bolt on" insurance policy in your child's name. Your own policy shouldn't be affected.

Have you tried a comparison site company to see if there’s any there that will add him. My 28 year old son is with Hastings as main driver, but with both myself and DH as named drivers. It is cheaper than most, but still expensive.

Thanks - that sounds promising

I will try this to see what comes up. Just seems silly as we have a policy and he was on it before as a named driver, with his brother, both provisional licenses, but now he can't remain on it as a driver with a full license

Maybe it’s because as he’s passed the driving test he won’t need a qualified driver with him.
Somebody to moderate his enthusiasm. Therefore perhaps more of a risk.

It's common after they pass to refuse or quote massive amounts. It's usually as cheap for them to have their own policy and build up an NCB. What car do you drive? We have a large SUV and ours wanted an eye-watering figure to add DS.

goldenretrievermum5 · 04/04/2024 18:31

Direct Line we’re happy to add DD on to my policy but for an eye watering sum

It’s large cost and inconvenience that you just have to grin and bear if you want to get teen DC on the roads at the minute I’m afraid.

That's exactly what it is, they are assessing the specifics of the OPs situation as being ones they do t want to cover.

It's inconvenient and frustrating but all insurers make their own risk assessments

GellerYeller · 04/04/2024 18:57

We had this. Under 18 and they just refused to even quote. She had learner driver insurance on her own car which was invalidated the minute she passed her test. So I had to drive it back from the test centre.
Hope you get sorted soon.

It’s legal to have two separate insurance policies on one car in different names? That sounds very odd.

I am having similar trouble with adding my son to my car. I have a small suv. Most won't give me a quote and the others are eye watering. Not even marmalade would give me a quote. It's very disheartening to be able to pass a test and then not be able to drive.
