Chessington and Legoland binned - any recommendations for days out?

CrispieCake · 04/04/2024 13:05

We've recently had shit days out at both Chessington and Legoland. Just dreadful from start to finish. I have a fairly hyperactive 7yo and the expectation that young children will queue quietly for hours for rides that last a couple of minutes max is just unbelievable. DC is a bit of a wuss too so a couple of times we waited in line and then he decided when we got to the front that he didn't want to do the ride. So we paid a fortune to... queue. I would rather have a wisdom tooth extracted than spend another minute in places like this.

We're not badly off, but like many other families feeling the pinch a bit. We're not doing an abroad holiday this year, just a few days seaside break and day trips. I can't afford to spend £150+ for my DC to have a shit time and to come home feeling stressed and mugged.

Any recommendations for days out? Any places that you'd blacklist/put in the bin? Useful to know the ages of your DC too.

Based south-east but happy to travel/camp.

I'll start.

Bin
Legoland
Chessington
Thorpe Park

Recommend
Hobbledown
Bocketts Farm
Roarr! (Norfolk)

"Yes, I'm not interested in attractions where you have to pay extra on top of an expensive entrance price to make it bearable."

Nope, neither me. The audacity...and the tastelessness of the haves and have-nots divide.

"Not Chessington's fault..."
It is. It is Chessington's fault.

Well said.

Portsmouth Dockyard is great. It's big so even when busy it's not terrible. HMS Victory and the MaryRose are atmospheric ( and interesting). You can keep the ticket and revisit if you don't get to do all the ships or activities. Laser quest is there as well.

Crunchymum · 04/04/2024 14:03

HMS Belfast is £25 for an adult ticket and TOL is £35. Not theme park prices but still bloody expensive.

Good grief! I had no idea these were now so horribly spendy 😡

CrispieCake · 04/04/2024 14:06

I don't mind expensive so long as it's worth the price/ usually a good experience. Of course, with kids there's always an element of hit and miss. This will be instead of a big summer holiday this year.

Drusillas would be great for that age

Also in the southeast and don't drive so these are all accessible by public transport. And very tight budget. Mine are older but these have been firm favourites for several years.

Kew Gardens - fantastic day out, so much to do we go several times a year. Sensory childrens garden gets very busy but plenty of other climbing and things to do. £2 if you claim universal credit or other benefits. Also on the 2 for 1 days out on the train.

London zoo - again we go yearly. Play area aswell as lots of animals. Penguins are fantastic and loads of seats so you can watch them while u have a picnic! £5 on universal credit or 2 for 1 days out on the train.

Various free London museums - the war museum (great as has a big play park next to it so can take outside run around breaks!) Usually activities on in school holidays. The V&A. The natural history. The science museum. The British museum.

The london transport museum was great for kids mine were a bit old at 11 and 14 but still enjoyed it. £1 for an annual pass if u get universal credit, kids are free.

Portsmouth dockyard. We did annual passes from groupon for several years running. We went every holidays, saw different boats and did all the interactive activities.

Tower of London was brilliant fun - tip go straight to the Crown jewels it gets busier as the day goes on. And do one of the tours they are fun and informative. Better to go not in the summer as its quieter in the half terms/winter. £1 on universal credit.

If you are near Brighton we love a day at the seaside. 2p machines on the pier. They sometimes do deals on the wristbands for rides. You also have Hollywood bowling who often do 50% off before 11am in holidays and globalls. Look out for deals for the Royal pavilion or sealife centre.

Paradise Park in Newhaven. We went several times a year until recently as mine are now too old. We used clubcard vouchers.

Various castles We did on clubcard vouchers/discount days. Best was Lewis and Arundel.

Arundel wetlands centre is lovely, not too busy but lots of playareas for kids too. Can't remember price of this.

Meerkat rewards are your friend for days out - 50% off at pizza hut and various other restaurants. 2 for 1 cinema tickets. You can get a year by doing a 1 day travel insurance for around £1.20. Family of 4 do 2 accounts for cinema. Just book at the same time to get seats together.

Research lots of different parks a bus/train ride away. A different park is always fun at that age. We went to a great ones in Chichester!

A day in Littlehampton- sandy beaches. Harbour Park rides/arcade. Lake for crabbing. You buy bait bags in the little shop nearby. Also insanely cheap ice creams. I got 2 Mr whippy with sprinkles/flake, vegan magnum and a tea for under £5.

We went to gullivers (in the car not doable on public transport) and stayed over. It was really reasonably priced, loads of rides and the longest we queued all day was 15 mins. Highly recommend it for those who don't like big rides or younger children.

We've done the big days too legoland and Chessington - both I recommend downloading the app and going back and forth where there's no queues. We did this middle of August on a sunny day and didn't queue longer than 30 mins at legoland. We went on everything too, dd2 went on the little dragon ride about 10 times plus loads of others!

Knockhatch
Bird World
Fisher's Farm

menopausalmare · 04/04/2024 14:14

My two love Fishers Farm park which is south of Guildford. Not as whizzy as the big theme parks but no queues and much more freedom for children to roam. Primary aged and pre school is best.

Diggerland, Drusillas, Whipsnade, Dover Castle, Winchester Science Centre

If you let us know which side of London you are, we can give you better tips - I know lots of places in Sussex which are great if you are round the corner, but not worth driving four hours to visit.

CrispieCake · 04/04/2024 14:15

I'm liking the sound of Littlehampton for an overnight stay.

Alice Holt Forest near Farnham is lovely.
Virginia Water and the Great Park generally.

We are Surrey/Kent borders. So sort of immediately south of London.

My son loved the Diana playground in London.

A river bus to Greenwich and a walk up to the observatory with a picnic with exhaust any child.

Just local woods with a nature checklist book and a picnic. I feel as if I did that for years.

The museum of childihood in London.

AhBiscuits · 04/04/2024 14:22

We always factor fast passes into the cost of theme parks, it's not worth it without them.

We have a ticket for the historic dockyard in Portsmouth. It's valid for a year. We've been 3 times and my kids (6 and 8) love it. My 6 year-old is a real history fan and the HMS Victory is heaven for him. They both enjoyed finding the points to scan for the audio tour.
Seeing the Marie Rose is pretty magical and they both liked the 4D cinema at the end. You hop on a boat across the harbour to the Submarine museum. It's fairly expensive but worth it.

Allshallbewell2021 · 04/04/2024 14:22

We went to Hever castle with a young visitor last year and they loved it, birds of prey, two mazes, archery and a picnic. But get there early as the car park fills up.

SootspriteSearcher · 04/04/2024 14:23

Sorry that was such an essay 🙊

Also to add I would personally avoid Druisillas. Yes it's got a great playarea etc. But the animals have very small enclosures and look very sad. Also lots of added experiences so will be lots of pestering.

Its cheaper to go to London zoo, especially if you make use of the 2 for 1 on the train but even their standard prices are cheaper. London zoo has a playarea and there's regents park outside so can have a run around afterwards.

I've also been to Howletts, Marwell, Wingham, Whipsnade. Wingham is fun as has the big dinosaurs too. My daughters will choose London over all of them though purely for the penguins!

Also to add if you can go to the Isle of wight its lovely. There's an animal sanctuary, the needles, lovely beaches and even a poo museum!!

TraitorsGate · 04/04/2024 14:23

There's something free stuff for kids in London, museums, parks, lego shop, th3re are uber river trips to Greenwich are good to visit the maritime museum, observatory, sit in the park with a picnic., climb the 02 or just look around Animals at Golders Hill Park and Battersea Park. Horninans Museum isn't far, Dulwich Park is lovely to walk around, Beckenham Place Park has a kids area, pool and cafe , Knole Park in Sevenoaks for the deer. You canvisit Windsor, see the outside of thecastle and go to the Great Park for free. We rarely pay to go anywhere now. It's just not worth it. Have you looked at the free stuff to do with kids site.

babysoupdragon2 · 04/04/2024 14:25

Wellington country park- there's a brilliant circus there too for the Easter holidays.

Fishers farm is good too

Would be enjoy go ape? My 6 year old loved it, but check height as to which trails they can do

Cotswold wildlife park is wonderful if they like animals. It's absolutely enormous, definitely a full day. Nearly is also Adam Hensons Farm Park and Crocodiles of the World which is much smaller but cool if they like reptiles!

Yes, definitely recommend all three of these!

Piggybacking on the thread but anyone got any recommendations for days out East Midlands? DC aged 6 and 2.

Wicksteed Park
Drayton Manor
Gullivers Kingdom

Allshallbewell2021 · 04/04/2024 14:31

Books like these have spotters guides at the back. I spent what felt like years of my life ticking off plants, trees, flowers with little ones in woods, parks, riverbanks.

crazyBadger · 04/04/2024 14:32

Hobbledown farm, huge grounds animals soft play. Multiple sandpits climbing frames, underground tunnels, play parks , high ropes course and they usually have stuff going on for half term/ school holidays.

Lonelycrab · 04/04/2024 14:33

Another Paultons vote here.

Last time we arrived slightly later than the majority, around 1pm and stayed till it closed, rather than getting there early like most do.

In the last 90 mins, the numbers rapidly thinned out and we effectively walking straight onto the rides- no queue. This was on a busy holiday weekend.

The cyclonator thing is horrendously terrifying though so watch out for that one…

mitogoshi · 04/04/2024 14:40

Go to somewhere like a huge playground, my dc loved the one in Cambridge when young, those nearer to you can suggest options. Avoid places with rides as queuing is inevitable.

At 7 dc should be able to queue with preparation, even the disabled queue was longer than 2 minutes!
