Is anything good about giving birth in January?

Like lots of us here I'll now be TTC this month for a January baby...

Is there anything good about giving birth in January?

I really do want to start a family, been trying for ages and soon to have first fertility clinic appointment as well. But I generally hate January and find it quite depressing.

It's not a winter thing. I'd have loved giving birth in November or December when things are Christmassy and fun and cosy.

But I get terrible January blues for some reason - and I'm finding it hard to get excited about this cycle. I'm not being shallow, I really do want a baby and will be delighted just to have a pregnancy if I ever do manage to and would cherish them at any time of year, I'm just worried about January blues making late pregnancy/birth/those first weeks harder...

Has anyone given birth in January?! Any pros and cons?!

I've done it twice. Um...something to look forward to after Christmas? January (especially v early January) birthdays aren't that much fun, though. Everyone forgets!

I really wouldn't over think it

Sincerely. Mother of children born in various months including one that should have been comfortably within one month and turned up in a different one.

This. You won’t have time to care once baby arrives.

Not given birth in Jan, but was heavily pregnant in June in a heatwave - absolutely no fun. Not comfortable at all.
Other baby born in late March, and apart from being extra careful on snow days, it was fine otherwise.
A Jan baby would be in middle of school year, so you wouldn't have any angst about whether to hold them back a year etc

Mumofteenandtween · 03/04/2024 21:45

If they turn out to be sporty then a lot of sports are based on calendar year so they will get a big advantage from that.

This. The good thing is that you’ll have a baby? Surely if you’ve been trying a while, even more the case you wouldn’t care when they are born, it didn’t even cross my mind whilst TTC

DS2 was due in January as was DGS. I had a Christmas Eve baby and DDIL had a Boxing Day one because they were both three weeks early 😂🙄

MumChp · 03/04/2024 21:46

Our son was born mid January .
I was happy he was born after Christmas. So much easier to have a birthday party. Apart from that never thought a lot about it.

haveyoutriedturningitoffandonagain · 03/04/2024 21:46

Yes you get a baby

Newsenmum · 03/04/2024 21:47

It’s really nice to have something to look forward to after Christmas. You might get snow! They’ll be older for their year which is better academically (but not too old). If they’re born in mid/late Jan you can get them better presents in the sales.
With pregnancy/birth you’ll be heavily pregnant in the colder months which is so much nicer. Once born, you can be all snuggly in the cold and then start getting out as it brightens up.
Jan babies are quite successful (I think the most successful?) people go on about capricorns especially.

Babies are exciting. You’ll be able to make it fun.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/04/2024 21:48

You’re not heavily pregnant in mid summer. You’ll always have something great to celebrate after Christmas.

RytonTarget · 03/04/2024 21:48

You get to hibernate with your newborn for a couple of months and then when the weather starts to get nice you can emerge to hit the streets with your buggy.

They're likely to start walking the spring when they're just one and have all summer to hone those skills outside on the grass.

Exactly. It makes January a lot less miserable . It’s nice going back to school and having a birthday party to look forward to.

I am due in August. Scared of being pregnant in a heatwave, baby being too hot and not being able to do anything about it, recovering / having the first hard weeks in summer when I won’t be able to go out, then being in winter during the bit when I will want to get out and about with them, it being a summer born boy.

Good things about Jan - you’re doing the hard early stay inside weeks when it’s crap weather, and as it all gets easier and you want to get out it will get lighter and good weather! I’d far rather have it that way around.

Also statistically fewer people born in Jan so hospital less busy, more staff, more likely to get a private room.

Namerchanger1 · 03/04/2024 21:50

Perfect time to have a baby. You’ll be heavily pregnant during winter when it’s cold and you won’t feel too hot and heavy

Then you get to cosy up with box sets in January when everyone else is in hibernation and you emerge when you have your shit together at 8 weeks or so old ready for a lovely spring and summer with your baby

perfect

Yep this. Sadly after years of infertility and and IVF I didn’t get to choose.

Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop · 03/04/2024 21:52

Less pressure to get out and about. Excuse to spend January sitting on the sofa cuddling and feeding your baby while watching TV. Child will be relatively older in the school year which means they will do better academically.

I’m sorry, that’s so tough

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/04/2024 21:53

My friend's January due children were born the day before and day after Xmas day. It's expensive. Not helpful I know. I kind of wish mine were born mid year but both of mine are far too near Xmas!

NoTouch · 03/04/2024 21:53

it won’t be overly hot when you are heavily pg.

It won’t be overly hot in the delivery suite?

By the time the weather improves you will be a dab hand at caring for your baby and ready to enjoy the outdoors.

NewMe2024 · 03/04/2024 21:53

Fun to be had after Christmas every year when their birthday comes around. Big birthday bargains in the sales.

Good ‘upper middle’ end of the age range in the school year.

Snuggling indoors in the late stages of pregnancy and with newborn, then ready to get out by the time Spring comes.

my late grandmother’s birthday was Jan 1st. We always had a big New Year’s Day get together to celebrate and I loved it. It was another family gathering to look forward to after the big Christmas celebrations were over. I also always sort of admired her for being a year older right on the nose of the year… so ‘tidy’ somehow! 😀

This. Our ds was born in January.

The only thing I found difficult was managing a newborn and a very young toddler of 20 months. I was wrecked.

That will depend on the child how well they do.

BreakfastAtMimis · 03/04/2024 21:55

Why are you concerned about this if you're not even pregnant? Jeezo.
