And where are they coming from???

We had our whole kitchen ripped out and knocked through so now our kitchen is in a brand new bit, so it’s not room related. And that was at the end of last year so it’s not seasonal. Although the weather at the minute is quite November-ish, so maybe it IS seasonal?

I’m actually so devastated that they have returned to our new kitchen - we can’t have anything nice it seems, between the moths and the kids!!!

Luckily they’re pretty stupid and therefore easy to swat. They’re about a CM long I’d say.

But who are they and why are they here????

Are they a blonde colour, or are they really as dark as in the photo?
If light-coloured, I'd say they're clothing moths. You can set off a smoke bomb thingy to kill them.

LonelyAndLostToo · 03/04/2024 20:42

Look like carpet/clothes moths to me too. There will be a nest in a dark corner somewhere and yes the winter dormant period is over. Its the larvae that are the problem so try to find the best and kill it. Theres some decent stuff you can get online

Rainbows89 · 03/04/2024 20:47

Probably food moths?

we once had them in our kitchen. Do you have any opened bags of lentils or grains or flour?

we had to bin so much stuff it was awful. Then I remember hoovering my kitchen cupboards.

anyway google food moths I bet that is what they are.

we did get rid of them don’t worry!

mimbleandlittlemy · 03/04/2024 21:12

Pantry moth. Throw out all dry goods. Scrub out cupboards. Pheromone traps. Crossed fingers…

Blackcats7 · 03/04/2024 21:12

If they spread and you start finding little white papery cases they are carpet and clothing moths. The best thing I found worked was Indorex flea spray all around edges of all carpets and into wardrobes. None of the specific moth killer stuff worked at all.

Fookintired · 03/04/2024 21:13

I was amused by the BASTARD MOTH in the thread title.
We get them too.

Meridean · 03/04/2024 21:14

Carpet moth. The maggots will be somewhere munching away and destroying your possessions. You need to find them before the infestation gets worse.

EpicPineapple · 03/04/2024 21:14

Google types if koth. We had carpet moths but they were a distinctive pale gold, all ine colour, what you have looks different. Food moths also exist but I think they might be black and white.

Anyway they’re hatching from eggs somewhere. Ours came from an old carpet someone gave us. If you have food moths I’d throw away any unsealed packs of food.

This. I eventually found the grubs in the under stairs cupboard munching on the carpet and a hessian bag. Hundreds of them.

look under sofas, beds, in wardrobes. Anywhere dark.

Only @mimbleandlittlemy is correct

These are pantry/Indian meal moths: Plodia interpunctella.

Your carpets are safe. They go for dried stored foods like rice, flour, beans etc. Anything kept in hessian sacks or bags, anything not in tins or spilled food are at risk.

Have a thorough look around the kitchen and pantry.

Are you sure? We have a 2 week old kitchen, most of the cupboards are almost-empty and probably only have one open bag of rice. But also we only have 1 room with carpet downstairs, a door and hallway away from the kitchen. The carpet is vile but only a couple of years old and there are no moths in there.

Hope it’s an easy fix but given we’ve just ripped a kitchen out we don’t really have much left to throw away! No festering food or anything.

Do you have any coathooks within flying distance? They will nestle into an undisturbed winter jacket or tweed cap, munching away. I had left a cashmere scarf on a hook, it made a lovely snack.

I hate them with a passion.

Eddielizzard · 03/04/2024 21:46

Most def the food moths. The two colour wing is very distinctive. It is possible to get rid of them. Could have come into the house in some flour or even pet food and set up home. Keep watch on your dry foods, make sure they're all sealed and get rid of the moths as you see them. Also look for little white worms that make little cocoons, often in corners, ceiling cornices, skirting etc.

niadainud · 03/04/2024 21:49

They are cunts. Mine have graduated from wool to cotton. Bastards.

BingoMarieHeeler · 03/04/2024 22:01

Ok thanks, I will go through the kitchen in the morning!

We've also suffered the carpet moth type. They don't look like yours at all. They are really pale and uniform colour. Utterly gross maggoty things the size of rice that feast on natural fibres. So I think the poster who is describing pantry moths is more likely accurate.

For the carpet ones we had success with ripping out the carpets and using the powder and smoke bomb things. Not sure if that works for other kinds. I read on here before about parasitic wasps which sounds both disgusting but fascinating and was going to be my next step but ours were vanquished.

AnnaMagnani · 03/04/2024 22:05

The smoke bombs worked for our carpet moths - they kill absolutely everything though.

Came home to all sorts of dead insects.

Poppercorn · 03/04/2024 22:11

Definitely pantry moths. We had the same thing. I eventually found where they'd come from and it was gross - in opened packets of herbs, stock cubes and grains. Even the spices, so do check! There was a bit of webbing inside the cardboard then I found the wriggly fuckers.

QuestionableMouse · 03/04/2024 22:18

If you have kids, have they hidden any food away? My nephew hid an apple and a raw potato (he does get fed, I promise!!) behind his chest of drawers and the smell was utterly vile - my poor sister was going mad trying to track it down!

Wondering if there's a pack of biscuits or something tucked away they're nesting in then flying about?

I second the indorex spray - I do my flat twice a year and rarely see a creepy crawly!

Notthatcatagain · 03/04/2024 22:18

I had them once, found in a bag of flour but they spread to loads of other things. All my dry goods are now in Tupperware. Apparently if you buy flour that has been poorly stored in the warehouse, they can come in on your grocery shop. Hope everyone finds that a cheering though for the night

XenoBitch · 03/04/2024 22:29

I had these really bad for a while. They attach their cocoon things to the ceiling. I wold just hoover them up.

Then suddenly, they were no more.

JulesJules · 03/04/2024 22:44

Omg I have literally never hoovered my ceilings

Dilysthemilk · 03/04/2024 22:46

They are pantry moths. They often come in through wild bird food as well. That’s how ours came in. You can get sticky traps from Amazon. Wipe everything down with white wine vinegar. They can take ages to eliminate. Very annoying.
