Does anyone remember this tv programme?

In my head I call it "extreme skinflints", but in reality it was called something like "extreme thrifting" or something like that.

It was all about money saving tips, but really insane ones. So people who only use one square of toilet paper at a time, then wring it out and hang up to dry for next time. Or people who scrape and gather up the scum around the bath and mould it into a bar of soap and so on.

Ok maybe not quite, but I do remember being repulsed by some of the "tips" and wondering how much exactly was being saved by all this fannying about. In one episode an adult woman bought young boys' pants to wear herself because the elastic was stronger and she was adamant this saved her money in the long run.

The tips were all hilariously pointless and barmy but it was quite addictive telly.

Does anyone remember this?

Extremely cheapskates?

Oh wow there's an American version! I wonder which came first.

The British one definitely didn't say cheapskates 😂 although that's definitely what they are. It was something more bland and inoffensive

lived on the Wirral? it was meant to show extremes and succeeded

I watched the whole series at the time. It was mind-boggling. I seem to remember there were some useful suggestions and tips in there, but mainly nutters who wash their tinfoil and weigh their soap.

Was there a lady that always wore a hat on it, called miss Moneypenny??

Extreme couponing?

Is that a real show? Sounds American. I find the coupon culture over there completely fascinating.

Couponing probably saves real money compared to some of the mad shit these people were up to.

Was that the one with the woman who somehow made a box of home hair dye last a couple of applications? My mum went to a talk she gave and apparently it was bizarrely enjoyable.

Was it populated by the same people who give those weird tips in magazines?

This is fantastic! I'm reminded of that Simpsons episode. "Squeeze every penny! Squeeze every penny!"

I’m thinking it’s was along the lines of Pennypinchers? I definitely watched it occasionally, some of the tips were bonkers and would have been a lot more effort than they were worth - quite funny though 🤣

MarilynBoo · 03/04/2024 18:31

It was a Channel 4 series called SuperScrimpers and was presented by Mrs Moneypenny. I used to love that show!

NannyR · 03/04/2024 18:31

It was superscrimpers. The episode that I remember, recommended saving the ribbons from the shoulders of your tops (the things that stop them falling off hangers) and plaiting them to make jewellery to give as a gift.

PlantDoctor · 04/04/2024 00:32

I remember that! The lady who wore boy's pants had a blog I used to follow. Just checked and she still posts! https://meanqueen-lifeaftermoney.blogspot.com/

Edit to add: she always seems to be a very nice lady. She finds it fun to save money

Love my life

I think Mrs Moneypenny had a column in the Financial Times.

Northernsouloldies · 04/04/2024 00:43

Scraping bath scum to make soap made me feel quite sick 🤢.
