Universal credit- migration letter. Do I claim?

Hi
just a quick question. Our tax credits come to an end and we received a migration letter.
We didn’t think we could claim universal credit as savings more than £16000.
I do have one disabled child and am claiming DLA. I don’t work but husband does.
No housing costs as living in owned home.

letter suggested to make a claim even if savings above £16000

we both filled in the claim but now we received both appointments to go to our local jobcentre armed with all our details about savings, ID etc and notes about we may call people to check your identity etc. We only filled in claim as it was suggested but in best case we might only get a small amount anyway for a transition period?

tbh it seems like such a hassle going to job center ( husband would even have to book time off work) and surely it’s unlikely we would get anything?

is this just a standard procedure ?

I think savings are ignored for a year once you move onto UC, although I'm not 100% as I don't claim it.

Have you done a calculation of what you might get, including transitional protection?

Tulipvase · 03/04/2024 10:25

Is there a number you can call to check? I wouldn’t want to waste the time either if they are just advising you to go just in case. Unless the rules are different due to the DLA bit?

no point of over £16k. zero

if less than £16k it’s tapered

I migrated 6 months ago. They told me that the £16k savings limit doesn't apply for the transition period - 12 months. The website backs this up.

Can i tag on to this. We haven't received a mitigation letter yet?. I assumed ours would stop automatically from April(ive not applied for UC due to well above threshhold savings(inheritance before anyone starts) but we got paid today, so I assume they still haven't sent all the letters out? And won't stop it until then?

beetr00 · 03/04/2024 10:45

eta @Barbarianmumsy yes, do claim.

@brocollilover rules are different with a managed migration.

Deduction is £17.40 for every 1k in savings over 6k

Therefore £174 (total) deducted for savings between 6000 and 16 000

After a managed migration, any savings you have over £16,000 will be disregarded for 12 months from when you move to Universal Credit.

After 12 months, the normal rules apply.

@CeeJay81 By the end of the 2024/25 tax year, most will have migrated to universal credit.

@beetr00 it's so confusing. I thought it was this year end of March. I'll wait for the letter then.

I haven't received a migration letter yet. I think it will be in the next month or so. However when I got my "heads up" letter, it said to renew tax credits as normal if you haven't yet received a notice to migrate so I presume tax credits continue until you do (if you're still eligible that is). You have three months in which to claim UC once you get a migration letter and tax credits stop when you submit your claim.
