Is supermarket pasta any different to branded?

I am talking normal pasta.

One of the tubes in this photo is Napolina and one is Sainsbury's. No discernable difference at all? The Napolina one is very slightly bigger.

For a 500g packet, Napolina is £1.50 and Sainsbury's is 69p.

I always buy the cheapo dried pasta, dried pasta all tastes the same to me, fresh pasta tastes different but dried is dried imo.

Feel better for that do you? 🙄

some pasta ingredients are durum wheat semolina, water

I buy the ones without water listed

Edited

Only meant to be light hearted, apologies if I offended. It’s just rare that someone eats only purely egg pasta only.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/04/2024 21:43

I often buy Asda Smartprice penne. Perfectly fine.
Of course fresh pasta is a different matter but I don’t often buy it.

dont think it is anything to do with mumsnet. Lots of kids love doing this

Do the parents though? On a Wed eve, when you get home from work at 5 and only have an hour before cubs starts?

it is a kids activity, but once made, keeps fresh in the fridge for several days

That’s ‘cause Napolina is crap pasta 😂! At least do a taste comparison with a half decent brand available in uk supermarkets like De Cecco or Rummo.

See I thought Napolina was a premium brand… how the other half live eh?!

existentialpain · 02/04/2024 21:53

I have to eat gluten free and go for wholegrain like buckwheat

CuteOrangeElephant · 02/04/2024 21:53

I always get De Cecco or La Molisana. Worth it especially for things like carbonara.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/04/2024 21:54

I wouldn’t have thought there was much difference but we got some de cecco and it was delicious! A world away from standard supermarket own.

ByUmberViewer · 02/04/2024 21:55

This is a great thread I'm learning loads.

I'm of the opinion that unless you are a really really really good pasta cook then you're better off buying dried pasta at the supermarket. Sure, it's fun to make your own pasta sometimes, but I definately would consider that just a fun thing to do once in a while.

I've always bought bog standard pasta from Tesco - can someone knowledgeable please explain the difference in dried pastas and what you get if you spend more?

Perfect28 · 02/04/2024 21:56

Yes I think this is one of the products where it does make a difference. Obviously the supermarket stuff is fine but the premium product is better.

make it yourself, it is only egg and flour, and put it through a pasta flattener

There's always one.

DeepBiscuit · 02/04/2024 21:56

one what? We are discussing the price of pasta, I am giving a cheap alternative. Fun children's activity too. What is your issue exactly?

TitaniasAss · 02/04/2024 21:59

I've tried every pasta known to man and my favourite by a mile is Lidl.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 02/04/2024 21:59

Have put some De Cecco on the shopping order and will report back. Also put on some Cirio chopped tomatoes instead of own brand.

@tomorrowisanotherdate

Cheap alternative?

Not everyone always has a stock of flour or eggs.

Not to mention the price of the pasta flattener itself.

Perfect28 · 02/04/2024 22:14

@BebbanburgIsMine you don't have to flatten or roll the pasta, there are plenty of shapes that can be made quite easily without.

what are you on about? If you want to make pasta you buy the flour and eggs. If you don't, you buy the pasta. Flour and eggs is cheaper - and the flattener? About £10-£15 and ours has lasted 30 years and still going strong!

Not everyone can afford the investment or has the time, especially when a bag of pasta costs about 40p.

I'm sure someone will come along soon to tell everyone that they should be growing their own wheat and raising their own hens for eggs.

I'm sure they wont be along suggesting that! What exactly is your problem. This is a thread about the price of pasta and the alternatives, and I am suggesting an alternative. What exactly are you taking offense at???????

ByUmberViewer · 02/04/2024 22:27

Fucking hell @tomorrowisanotherdate take a chill pill😂 It's just a thead about pasta!

RosesAndHellebores · 02/04/2024 22:28

In my opinion, pasta is one of the few things that is really worth buying the best quality available. There's a world of difference.

Come on, if a friend said to you I dont know whether to buy brand A or brand B of pasta would youe answer really be, I think you should start making your own?

That's not a regular conversation is it?
