Non Fault Car Accident….

Hey. Looking to you lovely lot for some advice as I’ve not had this problem before!!

I had to park down the road last night, as there was no parking outside my house and my husband had nabbed the space on the drive.

this morning, a neighbour has reversed out of their drive and hit my car causing quite a bit of damage to the back of the car around the passenger door and wheel arch, on the drivers side. Luckily they left a note, so I popped over this afternoon when it was spotted, she admitted fault, and I said I’d ring my insurance company..

anyway, my insurance company needed her details, but couldn’t find her insurance details on the MID, when she’s sent me her insurance details, it looks like she’s only insured her car today. (Letter dated today)

Does this mean my car might not get fixed?

what happens next? I’m insured with RAC, who have said that enterprise will be contacting me about repairs when they’ve spoken to the other side..

what kind of timeframe have other people had with getting their cars fixed?

thanks 😊

You need to report this to the Police. If she wasn’t insured at the time of the collision then she’s committed an offence. It wasn’t a no fault collision either.

Last two times i had someone run into my parked car, it took about 4 or 5 weeks to get it fixed. Most of that was deciding whether it was a write off or not - most companies have a threshold of a % if the value if the car they are willing to pay before writing off (can be 50% or less), and the rest was waiting for parts.

I would get advice from your insurance company on this. They will have had this situation before. Doesn't look good on her part though.

I’m not 100% sure she wasn’t, it just seems a bit suspicious that the insurance letter is dated today.

I'd leave it up to the insurers to sort out and to advise you about whether you need to go to police or not. I personally wouldn't at this stage.

I think if she was uninsured, your car will still get fixed, but they'll get the money from the MIB for it instead of from her insurer.

Mrsttcno1 · 02/04/2024 20:28

Her insurance company will almost certainly not pay out for this as they will check the time the policy was taken out vs accident time. They look for any reason not to pay anyway and this is a perfect easy one. Report to the police as suggested above & be prepared for the fact that your insurance will most likely have to cover your damages.

@FixTheBone did someone come out and view the car first?

im hoping it’s not a write off! It’s a 13 year old Honda Jazz so not worth a fortune anyway.

@Mrsttcno1

To be fair, I don’t know what time she hit the car. It wasn’t parked outside my house, theres no ring doorbell or anything of it. It could have happened at 6am, but she told me midday…. If she’s taken it out at 7am…

I didn’t notice the damage until 2.30pm

Playing devil's advocate she may have been insured and renewed it today, usually if they are insured they're insurer will ask to take the reigns so to speak and manage the repairs and courtesy car so that you don't have to use your insurance

Pinksnowstars · 02/04/2024 20:35

@annlee3817

Her insurers haven’t contacted me yet. I’ve only spoken to my own.

Nope, they recovered it to an assesment centre.

Thing is, if you're car is worth £5000, the bill might only need to be £2500 before they write it off, thats probably the cost of recovery, assesment and two body panels, and a respray so I reckon it'll be tight.

Pinksnowstars · 02/04/2024 21:03

Oh no! I love my little jazz.

hopefully they will contact me about recovering it.

there’s a child car seat in there too.

Car seat will add to the bill as well potentially.....

If there's no structural damage, you may be able to buy the car off the insurer and replace a door/bumper from a scrap yard which will lower the cost substantially, but the paint is unlikely to be an exact match.

I haven’t had many claims, but surely it is best to deal with your own insurance company rather than the other persons as your company represents your interests.

If you are not at fault there is no benefit their company managing your repairs. You need to inform your insurance of any accidents, whether you are at fault or not.

My Insurance company told me to let the other one handle it as they accepted fault, sadly I've had a lot of claims, had a few unlucky years with cars. Some my insurance company have dealt with it Others theirs, you still notify your insurance company
