What does he like?

Gardening? Art? Films? Reading?

CountFucula · 02/04/2024 17:19

i got one for an elderly relative and they were delighted with it as they get very cold and it was something they would never buy themselves :)

Hatty65 · 02/04/2024 17:20

Plant for the garden?

EventuallyDecluttered · 02/04/2024 17:20

What are his pastimes and interests?

rookiemere · 02/04/2024 17:23

Very randomly sardines with his year of birth on the tin ( not actually tinned then!) from a sardine shop in Porto.
He was delighted as he loves sardines but they aren't included on their weekly shop as DM doesn't approve.

Hot air balloon ride.
Helicopter flight
Fly a bird of prey
Afternoon tea on a steam train.
Or for the more adventurous zip wire , or wing walking.

A Private Eye subscription for mine -- he has to read it with a magnifying sheet, but he does enjoy having a good rant about Politicians These Days. Then he hands it on to a neighbour (and they both have a good rant, I suspect).

On the whole, I've found that that generation don't want extra 'stuff' cluttering up their lives.

Frutiloopy · 02/04/2024 17:30

Scratch cards

I went in Amazon and got him some '90' themed bits and pieces, like socks with 90 written like a speed limit sign, and a pint glass with 90 engraved on it. They were a bit corny but he absolutely loved them. He's 94 now and still wears the socks because "they make me feel like a youngster".

NuffSaidSam · 02/04/2024 17:34

Mine is 80, but hasn't wanted 'stuff' for ages. He likes a lunch out or an afternoon tea or vouchers for gardening stuff. I'm considering getting one of those memory log things with lots of questions that they can fill out like a life story thing.

A fantastic birthday cake and some sharing food and drink delivered a few days before the birthday, so he can offer it to all the well-wishers as they turn up.

Martinohmygod · 02/04/2024 17:40

Already going out for a big family lunch.
The socks sound good as he very on the eccentric side.

15 years younger, but for my Dad’s 75th my sister & I gave him a digital photo frame that all the family can send pics to via an app. He loves it.

Thank you that would be a good idea.
He could have all of the grand children on.

This is the one we got. When I'm on the phone to him he’ll say ‘You’ve just come up with one of your cats’ or ‘There’s your sister at the pub.’
