If you could choose any one weekday off, which would it be?

Trying to minimise days of childcare.
DH works shifts so usually has one weekday off which he can do a flexi working request for, and realistically finances will only allow me to go to 0.8, lowest, after maternity leave

Which weekday would you take off?

I think in the ideal I’d like Mondays off but also have to bear in mind bank holidays…

Re bank holidays my employer stipulates that if you work part time and do not normally work on that day you are not entitled to pay, nor are you entitled to a day off in lieu.

This means I should work Mondays, doesn’t it?

Any help appreciated, which day have you got off and why?

I hated not working on a Monday, as I got the 'Sunday glooms' on the Monday instead. I then switched to Wednesdays, it's nice having two days, break, then another two days. When mine were little it worked well as it meant two days nursery day home, two days nursery, two days home.
Fridays were always quiet at work which I liked as most people took Fridays off. I'm now self employed so tend not to work Mondays and Wednesdays, but because I'm self employed and love my job, I don't get the horrible gloomy sense of foreboding, I used to have on Monday evenings!

caringcarer · 02/04/2024 17:24

Wednesday so I got a midweek day I could catch up on cleaning and cook a nice meal.

Adviceplease123456 · 02/04/2024 17:28

Def Monday off! Means you really enjoy your whole weekend and Fridays still feel like a Friday even if you’re working!
as others said it’s actually much better for bank holidays as you get the proportionate amount to take at the time of your choosing! (This is 100% what there to legally I went through it all with my employer when they tried to do me out of it!)

I wouldn’t like a midweek day off as I had it previously and found it so hard to get momentum as weeks were very stop start.

I had Wednesdays because it meant I never worked more than 2 days in a row. Loved it

I'm another who had Wednesdays off. No matter how brutal the 2 workdays had been, you knew you could leave it all behind and recharge, ready for the next 2 before having the weekend off.

DutchCowgirl · 02/04/2024 17:55

My favourite is friday: have the house clean for the weekend, doing the groceries for the weekend. Quietly drink coffee and get some new energy for the weekend activities.

My DH has the wednesday off but I really don’t like the break in between, then i have to “get into my work” twice a week.

I had the monday once, but here a lot of local shops are closed and all my friends are working so no chance of socializing.

CactusMactus · 02/04/2024 18:02

Wednesday.
2 on, 1 off, 2 on, 2 off.

QOD · 02/04/2024 18:29

weds
my large emplopyer 0 over 2000 - do not let us benefit if we dont work mondays as part timers, we get 1 fifth of our weekly hrs hol allocation for a monday bank hol, even tho i aowrk 7 on a monday so i lose out very BH mon

Happyboom · 02/04/2024 18:32

Having Monday off is good re Bank Holidays because you get them (prorata) added to your leave so you get more flexible days.

Popfan · 02/04/2024 18:33

I had Wednesdays off when my DS was a toddler, it was lovely, like a mini weekend after 2 days at work.

OnGoldenPond · 02/04/2024 18:39

Employers always try to bullshit part time employees on this point. It became law over 20 years ago that part time workers are entitled to pro rata days for bank holidays. Yet they STILL try to pull a fast one on this. Angry

chocoshopoholic · 02/04/2024 18:41

I have Tuesday off. I didn't pick it, it was the only day available due to most of the team already going down to 4 days.

I wasn't over the moon with a Tuesday when it was first decided, but now I quite like it. I find I can usually sort most appointments needed e.g. hair/dentist/clubs etc.

I can also take Monday as Annual Leave and get a nice long break. We have Friday lunchtime finish already.

reluctantbrit · 02/04/2024 18:43

I have Fridays off. I like to start the week like everyone else and then just stop earlier.

I hate having mid-week off, I found that work will be left for me to do instead of my colleagues doing it.

Validus · 02/04/2024 18:48

Tuesday.

breaks up the week and every now and then I would get a super long weekend.

whatsthecraic91 · 02/04/2024 18:51

I currently work Monday Tuesday Friday. Maximises bank holiday entitlement. Yes you have to pay nursery when they are closed but you miss out on so much leave if you take a
Monday off

strawberry2017 · 02/04/2024 18:53

I have Fridays off which I love but my friend has Wednesdays and her theory is she never has to work more than 2 days in a row which does sound good to me as well!

Simonjt · 02/04/2024 18:57

I had Fridays off when I worked for days, during the nursery years it meant I could go away on a Thursday evening and have a long weekend away, it also meant more bank holidays off. My industry isn’t quieter on a Friday and it wasn’t a popular day off as others preferred a midweek break, so it was easy to me to be granted Friday and I was losing a quiet/easy day.

Sletty · 02/04/2024 19:04

100% Wednesday
Its so lovely having wee midweek day off

justtidying · 02/04/2024 19:07

Another vote here for Wednesday. Breaks the week up nicely.

catlovingdoctor · 02/04/2024 19:11

Wednesday because my job is so mentally/ emotionally draining and also physically tiring. It's hard to do more than 2 days at a time. (Dentist).

TheHauntedPencilCase · 02/04/2024 19:11

I have mondays off at the moment, works well for me. I have had Fridays which I also like but lots of people take them off so I find its a really productive working day for me. I have also tried Tues/weds/Thurs at various times and didn't like it. I spent extra time preparing for the day off and then felt like I was catching up for the rest of the week. Tagging it onto a wknd has minimised that extra work. I get paid bank hols though so they effectively get added to my A/L which gives me a bit more flexibility which is an additional bonus.

CreativCarly · 02/04/2024 19:13

People always want Friday or Monday but when I had a Monday off I found the straight run of days with my child (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) monotonous to be honest, whereas when I moved my non working day to a Tuesday I loved it. I cherished the weekend but was glad to be back working on a Monday, but then off on Tuesday as a bonus day with my child which I looked forward to and appreciated rather than felt like I was clambering for something to do / killing time which I had felt on a Monday. Everyone is different but I've heard others say the same.

WeightoftheWorld · 02/04/2024 19:28

Definitely Mondays if you would otherwise have paid childcare on that day, as most providers still bill you for the bank holidays so you're paying for loads of days you don't use. DH works 0.8 over 4 days and I usually work slightly over 0.6 over three days. He has Mondays off and I have Thursdays and Fridays off. It's the best combination as we don't generally have to take much AL if we want to do a long weekend style trip away. We usually do say Thurs-Mon holidays so don't pay for any nursery care we won't use, he only takes 2 days AL and I only take 1. Works well.

ABirdsEyeView · 02/04/2024 19:37

If you take Fridays then you'll have lovely long weekends every time there's a bank holiday Monday

DearTheodosiaa · 02/04/2024 19:38

The best day to have off in the week is a Thursday! It feels like your week is only Monday-Wednesday as you're off Thursday and then back in Friday to finish things off for the week and it's always a nice vibe in the office on a Friday anyway.

You also only need to take the Friday off for a really long weekend.

ScrummyDiva2 · 02/04/2024 19:40

Definitely a Monday. You accrue time off for every bank holiday.
Bear in mind that, if you chose any other day, you effectively owe time for every bank holiday. You are entitled to a fifth of your working week for every BH. If you work a Monday, and work more hours on that day than what equates to 1/5 of your week, the rest comes off your holiday allowance. Hopefully that makes sense! Smile
