Car crash unknown driver

Any idea how I can get the name of a car owner from the registration? Car crashed into me earlier and we exchanged details by taking screenshots of insurance, but it doesn't include the driver/owners name, and I also didn't get a phone/address for him.

In my defense I was pretty shaken up after he swung his car into the side of me 😭

Your insurers can deal with that it for you

Hope so, still trying to get through on the phone. I called one on those companies who sort it all for you, but they couldn’t help without the name

You don't need the name. Just leave it to your insurer. They'll be able to find out the name of the policyholder instantly.

Pootles34 · 02/04/2024 12:48

What companies that sort it all for you? You should just be ringing your insurance surely?

Lanawashington · 02/04/2024 12:52

but it doesn't include the driver/owners name, and I also didn't get a phone/address for him.

You don't need any of that, all you need to give your insurance is the registration and they will do the rest. Don't go through one of the third parties that does it for you, they are a waste of time so just use your own insurance company

TheNoodlesIncident · 02/04/2024 12:54

Wouldn't the police be able to find out, surely you have reported the accident to them?

Just go through your insurer no one else. There's been a few posts in legal about these companies and theyre not posting because of great service. This is part of what you pay your insurer for. Give them everything you have, tell them what happened, get a claim number and leave it to them to sort, that's their job.

There's no requirement to report an accident to the police if already you've exchanged details at the scene and if no one is injured, unless there are allegations of some other driving offence being committed. Just let your insurance company deal with it - that's why you pay for insurance

Blanketpolicy · 02/04/2024 13:01

You don’t need to report an accident to the police unless you couldn’t exchange details, someone was injured or there was a driving offence.

Your exchanging details has gone a bit wrong in the panic. Call your insurer to find out if you have enough details. If not call the police to explain and they might be able to help.

I have no idea what “ one on those companies who sort it all for you” are, but you are legally obliged to tell your insurance company you have had an accident.

ToWonderWhyIBother · 02/04/2024 13:06

Just ring your insurance company and give the details of the accident.

DO NOT USE ANY OTHER COMPANY AS YOU WILL BE LIABLE FOR THE COSTS SHOULD THERE BE AN ISSUE.

firstimemum23 · 02/04/2024 13:16

It’s literally no bother. Just give it to insurer, we were in a hit and run and didn’t even know anything about them except footage of licence plate on camera. Sent that to insurer, paid out in a few weeks. Easy.

Hmm not sure I would agree here. It depends what happened. We used a claims management company and got lots and it’s all settled fine. They were 5* rated.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 02/04/2024 13:19

Your insurer's problem not yours.

You dont have to report all accidents to the police, how would they have enough resources to be dealing with every car prang?

You don't need to hope, it's literally what claims departments are there for

WithIcePlease · 02/04/2024 13:38

Recent thread on here by a woman who had called the top hit when she googled her insurance company. It was a claims management company and as I remember she ended up being taken to court for thousands

anyolddinosaur · 02/04/2024 14:38

Your insurer can get any details they need from the other insurance company or the DVLC.

OwwOwwLowFat · 02/04/2024 16:25

Thanks all.
My insurer were fine without the name. I did report to the police and gave the insurance the crime ref number, as this happened outside a shop with external CCTV. Store said they don't allow members of the public to see the recordings, only police. Police said they don't deal with small car accidents, but possibly insurance could obtain CCTV . No idea if that will happen or not, it's up to the insurance now.

Car hire arranged and repairer collecting car, tomorrow.

Just out of interest, who are "one on those companies who sort it all for you"?

Never heard of them before, what do they do that your insurer wouldn't for a small bump? Sounds a bit like a scam/unneeded service.

The only other people I would think of who would get involved in a car accident is if you wanted to engage with specialist solicitor for a significant injury.

They’re claims management companies (AX is one we used)

They give you a hire car if you’re not eligible (we weren’t as car was written off, not damaged. Many insurers have this stipulation) so they gave us a (Stunning) courtesy car. They also managed the collection and disposal for salvage of the old car (it was parked at the time so wasn’t in the way so we had to sort it). They’re also there to give you regular updates.

I wouldn't say AX were amazing but they did help us and ensured all costs were covered by the other side. Our insurer was shit though and only eventually sorted their end once ombudsman got involved.
