If you're choosing a casual jumper would you opt for a hoodie or a casual jumper that was a mix of smart casual ...

I'm trying to do some market research into what would sell better as a casual jumper. Personally I like a sweater but not necessarily with a hood. I'd probably like some kind of detailing at the bottom to make it a bit more exciting . What are your "yes" and "definitely nots" when choosing a casual top?

Definitely not a hoodie. I don't think I own any, apart from a giant oversized wool one that I used to wear at my desk when WFH when the house was being renovated and freezing.

The neck is the key thing for me in jumpers, as well as the wool -- nothing too high or rigid, or I want a v-neck.

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2024 12:07

A hoodie comes under 'very casual' for me, so limited in when I can wear one. We're casual for WFH, but not 'hoodie casual' so I'd prefer something a bit smarter.

Thank so much ladies. So if your objective is wanting a nice few jumpers for throwing on in your day off/ going for a walk/ having a casual lunch with friends etc. im hoping to
Achieve luxury but comfortable jumpers that look more than just a knackered looking faded hoodie.

Do you think there would be a market for this? I don't want gym Wear but I'm
Thinking for woman that want to feel good in a brand that isn't gym wear, almost like a nice walking brand kinda thing that's comfortable, stylish and yet has its place in both coffee shops , walking groups, a day up the town. Am I being ridiculous?

Not a hoodie. I do have a couple but I only wear them in the house.

I don't own any sweatshirts.

I wear knitted jumpers, preferably v neck and relaxed fit rather than too tight. Or a fleece but that's, for me, at the very casual end of the spectrum.

I'm in my early 40s and mostly live in jeans, if that helps?

Dearg · 02/04/2024 12:19

I don’t think that’s ridiculous at all. I have a couple of oldish - not quite vintage- White Company knitted hoodies - one is cotton / wool mix, the other has a bit of cashmere . The hood bits are soft and not bulky, and they layer over a multitude of bases. I also have a lovely Celtic& co slouch with an offset cowl neck. Those are my go-to for casual coffee , lunch etc, with jeans or cords. I am in Scotland so I have sweaters of every type and weight , and they get a lot of use.
Edited to remove extraneous pen.

I mean, there’s billions of companies that make those kinds of sweaters – how would yours stand out?

I know this is the thing. I'm trying to gather some information on what people like, along with a few ideas I have. But I do take your point that there are millions of companies doing this, yet there is always room for something new to come in and dominate for a while on social media. Xx

To me, a walking brand and something I'd wear to have lunch with friends are two entirely different things -- if I'm going for a walk, I'll be wearing a fleece or something with wicking that can go under a waterproof. I never wear gym gear unless I'm actually going to the gym. Comfort is really important to me, especially in knitwear, but if I were wearing a jumper out for a casual lunch, it would be something like this (Cos and The Knotty Ones).

Hoodies do my head in. Make driving uncomfortable!! Casual jumper without a thick bottom band... Perfect.

Thanks so much for your input! Yes I know what you mean. I want nice luxury comfortable clothing that I'm not embarrassed if I'm seen out and about and makes me feel good wearing it. Something fitted, but not skin tight, maybe an option that's longer at the bum to cover my cellulite. Maybe a nice zipper detail too.

I like a turtle neck jumper but fairly loose so doesn't strangle. Or a crew neck. I also like a jumper with a decent length sitting at least mid hip. I prefer plain knit or just a little bit of pattern. I would hate a scalloped bottom and definitely no beading or embellishments. Prefer cotton or a cotton blend.

PotatoPudding · 02/04/2024 12:45

I don’t suit crew neck sweatshirt, so opt for hoodies for day to day and around the house but go for a higher neck if I want to look nice.

SirenSays · 02/04/2024 12:58

I'm struggling to think of what you mean. In a hoodie I want a zip, LONG sleeves, a huge enchanted style hood, angled sides instead of straight so you keep the hourglass shape, and huge pockets. A nice hoodie like that I'd be happy to wear casually, walking, or to the gym.
Any regular jumper I'd love it to be oversized, to have princess seams, dropped shoulders, pockets, Long sleeves.

cariadlet · 02/04/2024 13:13

For casual tops, I always go for a hoodie. I wear dresses and skirts for work but live in jeans and a hoodie when I'm not working.

I find them comfy and practical. But I do like a hoodie with a zip. I find the ines that pull over the head a bit restrictive.

Probably a no. I do wear sweatshirts quite a lot, but I tend to do for the plain sports type ones. Honestly, ‘dressed up’ sweatshirts make me think of my MIL.

Snoken · 02/04/2024 14:32

I like Sezane sweatshirts because they are thinner than sports sweatshirts so the shape looks better when they are on you and I don't look bigger than I am: www.sezane.com/en/collection/sweat-shirts-sailor-tops/sweatshirts

Yes, this is what I look for. Definitely not a hoodie. I prefer natural fabrics, no acrylic or polyester thank you. I hate patterns, but like texture. I sometimes like subtle details like a split hem at the sides or a zip front, or a couple of buttons on the cuffs.
